This provision is good

 The childminder attends regular training and puts what she learns into effective use to help improve children's outcomes. For example, she has developed her knowledge of how children learn to help meet their individual learning needs.  Children are confident and motivated to learn. The childminder forms secure attachments with children and values their unique ideas.  The childminder uses assessment arrangements well to identify, and plan for, children's next steps in learning. She is able to identify any gaps in development and put necessary measures in place to close these swiftly.  Children have good opportunities to investigate play and learn about the natural world. For example, they learn about growth and decay though activities, such as planting and growing.  The childminder works closely with parents to help provide a consistent approach in meeting children's care and learning needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 There are fewer opportunities for children to develop greater awareness of other languages and cultures to support diversity in the setting.  The childminder does not ensure that her daily planning is varied, and provide opportunity for children to build on their physical skills even further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities for children to gain a deeper understanding of other languages and cultures  review daily activities to help children build on their interest and challenge their physical skills even further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed documentation, such as evidence of the childminder's suitability and qualifications.  The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and children throughout the inspection.  The inspector discussed with the childminder how she evaluates her practice and plans for improvement.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector viewed areas in the property used for childminding.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has comprehensive policies and procedures in place and she consistently follows these. She knows what to do if she is concerned about children's welfare, including those who may be exposed to extreme views and behaviours. The childminder works closely with other professionals, such as her local authority improvement officer and other childminders, to address any areas for improvement. For example, with their support, she has reorganised her play areas so children can easily choose with what they want to play. The childminder monitors the progress of all children well and checks that teaching is consistently effective and meets the needs of all children. She has built good links with other early years settings that children attend to help provide continuity in learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses information from parents well to plan for what children need to learn to make the best possible progress. She provides a good range of resources and activities to suit the different age groups. For example, babies and younger children have numerous opportunities to touch, feel and explore different materials. Older children engage in lots of writing, sewing and reading activities to help prepare them for their next stage of learning. The childminder is skilful at supporting children to make connections with letters and sounds. For example, during an alphabet bingo game activity, she encouraged children to link letters to the sounds they make, and identify these in written words.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Overall, the childminder supports children's physical well-being well. For example, she provides nutritious meals and takes children out for walks. She supervises children well and carries out thorough risk assessments to help children play in a safe learning environment. The childminder supports children to learn about risks and staying safe. For example, she teaches children to be vigilant when out and about, and explains what they need to in case of a fire or emergency. She gives clear expectations for behaviour and encourages children to respect and value one another.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make very good progress in relation to their starting points. They are happy and confident, and have good manners. Older children maintain good focus and demonstrate willingness to learn. For example, they listen and concentrate for an extended periods. They develop good mathematical skills, such as counting and number recognition. Older children talk confidently and begin to write their names. Children gain useful skills for future learning, including starting school.
