Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching and learning during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of conversations with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of people living in the house. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder keeps accurate records of children's attendance and has a comprehensive set of policies and procedures to help ensure children are protected and well cared for. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder can identify possible signs that may cause concern and knows how to make a referral to authorities about a child's welfare. She has a broad knowledge of wider safeguarding issues. She keeps up to date with requirements and evaluates her practice well. The childminder completes online training to help ensure her knowledge is current. The environment is checked regularly and is kept clean and safe for children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder gathers information from parents about what children are able to do when they first start. She uses their views as well as her own observations when assessing children's starting points. The childminder effectively promotes children's speech and language development. She talks to them about what they are doing and introduces new words into their play along with clear explanations of the meaning. For example, when playing with cards the childminder explains that they are shuffling the cards and that this means they are mixing them up. Children show sustained interest in looking through pictures of previous activities. The childminder makes good use of the time to reinforce children's learning and helps children understand changes over time. For example, the childminder explains that they were much younger in a photograph and not yet able to walk and that is why they were in the pram.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children build close bonds with the childminder and demonstrate that they feel happy and secure in their interactions. They learn how to keep themselves healthy. They adopt good hygiene routines and choose from healthy snacks and meals. The childminder takes children out into the local community on a variety of trips to playgroups and parks. This helps them develop a sense of their place in community and develops their wider social skills in preparation for school. Children choose freely from a range of toys and activities that they find stimulating and interesting. Children learn how to keep themselves safe and they follow the simple rules. For example, they understand not to throw things in the house so they don't hurt themselves or others.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children are progressing well from their starting points. They are eager to learn, happy and settled. Children are confident and gain the skills they need to move on to school. They happily take part in activities and show perseverance, such as when they learn new words and try them out for themselves.
