p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder has not developed links with other settings that children attend. This does not effectively complement and support children’s learning and progress. The childminder does not use information from her assessments of children's progress effectively to target children’s individual next steps in learning. The quality of teaching is inconsistent. The childminder does not use wider teaching methods to ensure learning opportunities are challenging and support children’s self- confidence more securely. The childminder does not use self-evaluation well enough to set challenging targets for improvement and raise the quality of future practice.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder has built good relationships with parents. Parents are happy with the care and activities that she provides for children and praise her friendly and flexible service. The childminder and assistant work well together. They maintain good supervision of children and ensure the learning environment is safe and secure. The childminder uses a positive and caring approach. She encourages children to be kind and to learn how to share. The childminder supports children’s emerging speaking skills well. She engages children in conversation about their activities and they sing favourite songs together.

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector and the childminder observed and discussed activities together. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke to children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of some parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the correct reporting procedures to follow if she has any concerns about a child in her care. The childminder and assistant have completed child protection training. The childminder has regular discussions with the assistant about her practice. She is helping the assistant to achieve a childcare qualification. However, the childminder has not ensured there are effective systems in place to monitor and consistently improve the quality of teaching. This does not ensure children make good progress from the time they start. Furthermore, the childminder does not effectively evaluate her provision. For example, she has not set challenging targets to focus on improving outcomes for children more swiftly.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
Generally, the childminder has a suitable awareness of children's developmental needs. She interacts well with children and joins in with their play. However, she does not use information from her assessments of children's progress effectively to focus on children's next steps in learning. Generally, children engage well with activities and resources. For example, they enjoy playing with wooden trains and tracks. They discuss train journeys and the childminder supports children to make links to a recent family trip. The childminder involves all children and ensures resources reflect their different ages. Younger children enjoy playing with sensory resources. For instance, they enjoy pressing buttons and activating the lights and sounds on some toys.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder and assistant are positive role models for children. They emphasise and encourage good behaviour. The childminder works well in partnership with the parents, sharing information about children's daily routines, activities and well-being. Children enjoy regular outings to the local park. This helps to support their physical development. However, the weaknesses in teaching and learning mean there is not sufficient focus on children's emotional development, such as their self-confidence. Furthermore, she has not built links with other settings that children attend to ensure children's care and learning is consistent. The childminder provides a range of resources for children. These reflect some positive images of diversity and help children to learn about similarities and differences between themselves and others.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
The learning and development of all children is not effectively supported. Some children lack self-confidence in their learning. However, children are steadily learning some skills they need to prepare them for future learning, such as school. For example, mealtimes are an opportunity for children to develop self-care skills. Some older children show an interest in early literacy and mathematics. For example, they count objects and show increasing control by using mark-making tools during craft activities.
