This provision is good
The childminder observes the children and makes accurate assessments of their achievements. She identifies when they need additional help and provides suitable support to ensure they make good progress. The childminder's teaching of communication and language is particularly strong. She models language well and listens attentively. She asks questions that encourage children to think and respond. The childminder helps children to become independent. For example, she encourages children to make choices in their play, find and put on their own shoes and prepare their snack. Children learn about the benefits of healthy eating, the importance of exercise and good hygiene practices, through routines and planned activities. Good communication with parents and professionals enhances continuity in the children's care and learning. The childminder is a positive role model for children. She is attentive and caring, and

she sets clear appropriate behavioural expectations. Children are settled and happy in the childminder's care, and their behaviour is good.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not currently fully explore ways to extend her learning and teaching skills, to benefit outcomes for children further. Occasionally, the childminder does not plan as well as possible to extend children's knowledge and understanding of the natural world around them.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

enhance the programme of professional development to help extend knowledge and the quality of teaching to an even higher level make full use of opportunities for children to explore and investigate the natural world, to support those children who learn best outdoors.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector had a tour of the premises and looked at resources with the childminder. The inspector observed the childminder and the children at play. The inspector discussed the activities with the childminder and talked to the children at appropriate times. The inspector took into consideration the views of parents. The inspector discussed self-evaluation with the childminder and reviewed a sample of the childminder's documentation.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a thorough understanding of child protection and safeguarding. She keeps up to date with mandatory training. Careful risk assessing enables her to manage potential risks effectively. When she works with an assistant, she supervises them appropriately to ensure their work is consistently effective and their safeguarding knowledge is good. The childminder carefully monitors the quality of her service. She seeks the views of parents and children to help her to develop and improve constantly. The childminder monitors children's progress well to ensure that any identified gaps in their learning are narrowing. Daily communication with parents, in addition to planned opportunities to discuss children's progress, helps to ensure strong parental partnerships that encourage children's continuous learning.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides a highly stimulating environment for children. Her teaching skills are good. Children experience a wide range of activities in the home and in the community. The childminder uses children's interests to help make learning enjoyable. For example, children enjoy exploring the textures and shapes of lentils and pasta. They develop their hand-to-eye coordination as they fill and empty various containers and make shakers. The childminder supports children's early mathematical skills well. For instance, she encourages children to match and sort items, to count and to recognise shapes as they play.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children develop positive relationships with each other; they learn to share, take turns and be kind to each other. They demonstrate an increasing awareness of good hygiene practices from an early age. For example, they learn to wash their hands independently after outdoor play and before eating food. The childminder encourages children to look after the resources and develop an awareness of the value of the items they use. Children learn to take appropriate risks. For example, they follow the rules as they use the trampoline and they learn to cut up their fruit with a knife. The childminder supervises children closely during these activities to ensure their safety.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good developmental progress and are well prepared for the next stages in their learning. They build on their early writing skills, for example, as they draw shapes with chalk on the easel. They describe their creations to the childminder and admire each other's work. Children enjoy sharing books with the childminder and attentively listen and talk about what they can see in the pictures. Children develop their social skills, for instance, as they meet with other adults and children at various activities for young children in the community. They learn about the diversity of the community around them, including from their outings, the activities they undertake and the resources they use.
