Previous inspection: Requires Improvement

p.1

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not hold a current paediatric first-aid certificate.  Although the childminder has made some progress since her last inspection to develop effective partnerships with parents, she does not consistently encourage parents to regularly share what they know about their children's learning at home.  The childminder does not use observations and assessments of children's progress well enough to plan activities that motivate children to learn and challenge them sufficiently to develop new skills and make good progress.  Although the childminder has made some improvements to her practice since the last inspection, she has not developed an effective method of self-evaluation to help her focus on improving the quality of teaching further and improve outcomes for children.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The children have good relationships with the childminder and are comfortable in her company. They respond well to the childminder's expectations for their behaviour and get on well with other children.  Children who speak English as an additional language are supported well. The childminder helps them to use their home language in their play to support their developing communication skills.  The childminder's premises are secure and extremely clean for children to play in. The childminder supports children's understanding of healthy lifestyles effectively.  The childminder supports the development of children's physical skills particularly well.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 obtain a current paediatric first-aid certificate and ensure this is maintained at all times. 18/10/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen the arrangements for parents to regularly share what they know about their children's learning at home, to further enhance the activities provided  improve observations and assessments to plan and provide challenging activities that interest children and help them make good progress  make better use of self-evaluation to focus more accurately on improving the quality of teaching and outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and the children in the childminder's home.  The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector spoke with the childminder about her understanding of safeguarding, child protection and first aid.  The inspector sampled documentation, including children's records and the childminder's policies.  The inspector undertook a tour of the premises.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands and fulfils her role in keeping children safe and protected from harm. She knows how to report any concerns about their welfare. The childminder supervises children well and teaches them how to keep themselves safe through the daily routine and while on outings. However, the childminder does not reflect on her practice to identify all weaknesses. She has failed to keep her skills and knowledge up to date, including her first-aid training. The childminder talks to parents at the end of each day to keep them informed about what children have enjoyed doing. She regularly shares learning summaries with them to show their children's development and their next steps in learning, so parents are aware of how their child is progressing. However, the childminder does not routinely ask parents to tell her what children are achieving at home, to help her plan even more precisely for their future learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder monitors children's progress through regular observations and assessments. However, she does not monitor children's progress precisely enough to plan challenging activities to extend their learning and help them achieve the best possible outcomes. Nevertheless, children are happy and occupied. The childminder talks to children about what they are doing during their activities. This supports younger children to use language to respond. For example, as children lift the flaps in books, she encourages them to learn new words and to point to and name objects. The childminder supports children's language development well overall.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder has allowed her first-aid certificate to lapse. However, she demonstrates a secure knowledge of what to do in the event of an accidental injury. The childminder is kind to the children and helps to develop their sense of self-worth. She role models good manners and is teaching children about acceptable behaviour and boundaries. Children behave well and are welcoming and polite to visitors. They develop sound social skills. The childminder takes children out into the local community to help them become used to meeting different people in various situations. They accompany the childminder as she takes and collects children from school so they become familiar with this environment. The childminder promotes children's health, for instance, by teaching children about a healthy lifestyle. For example, the childminder makes home-cooked meals that they enjoy and they benefit from time to be active.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not engage in challenging activities to help them prepare well for the next stage in their learning. However, they make adequate progress and mostly work within the typical range of development for their age. Children confidently explore, and they select toys and equipment independently.
