p.1

3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The quality of teaching is variable. The childminder understands all the areas of learning. However, occasionally the childminder does not fully challenge the older children in their learning, and younger children sit for prolonged periods of time watching the activity.  Children's choices about what they want to play with are limited. Activities and experiences are more focused on adult choices and group activities. Therefore, children's independence is not fully promoted.  The childminder does not supervise or mentor her assistants to further improve the quality of the overall practice.  Children's dignity is not always respected within personal hygiene procedures. The children take turns and sit and watch each other being changed in a living area of the home.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder has worked closely with the local authority support adviser to help her professional development, addressing many of the areas for improvement identified at her last inspection.  The childminder and her assistants effectively help children to feel safe and form secure attachments. For example, they are caring and friendly, and encourage children to use their comforters to promote their emotional well-being.  The childminder works well in partnership with parents. They communicate consistently and parents state that the childminder is loving and welcoming.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 put appropriate arrangements in place for the effective supervision of staff 07/11/2017

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that learning opportunities are carefully planned to support the developmental needs of all children, and are consistently interesting and challenging for them 07/11/2017

p.2

Due Date

 increase the opportunities to promote children's independence and their ability to make choices about their own play. 07/11/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 help to promote children's dignity and respect for other children's privacy during personal hygiene procedures.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of all persons living and working on the premises.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is now obtaining the relevant checks for all adults living and working on the premises. The childminder and her assistants know how to identify and report concerns relating to children's welfare. The childminder is working closely with the local childcare support team to address the weaknesses from the previous inspection. For example, she has introduced new systems to plan and assess children's learning. However, these systems have not been embedded long enough to help children make the best possible progress. The childminder evaluates some areas of her provision to prioritise some improvements. However, she has not put appropriate arrangements in place for the supervision of her assistants, meaning the systems for evaluating the whole provision are not yet effective.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder is increasing her awareness of the learning and development requirements. She records children's progress in the different areas and monitors this to check that they are developing within appropriate levels for their age and stage. However, some of the children's next steps in learning are repetitive and do not offer enough challenge. When supporting the children, the childminder does not always ask probing questions to make them think and share their ideas. However, the children do benefit from a variety of activities that they enjoy. They use technology well to research knowledge and information. The childminder talks to them about the current topics and this helps them to develop their language and learn new words.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder is attentive to children's individual routines and ensures they can rest when needed in safety and comfort. She encourages good manners and teaches children to share and take turns. However, the childminder does not always follow good hygiene routines. She does not ensure that children's dignity is promoted when carrying out personal hygiene procedures. The childminder takes the children on regular trips and visits. This means they have opportunities for fresh air and physical exercise and to develop their social skills as they mix with other children.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are progressing satisfactorily. In general, they are keen and eager to learn and enjoy many of the activities. Older children are learning skills which help to support them to get ready for the move to school. This includes learning to write their names and number recognition. However, the best possible outcomes are not promoted as they are not consistently challenged in their thinking. Regular adult-led group times mean that younger children are not always able to follow their own play and ideas.
