Previous inspection: Requires Improvement

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not monitor children's ongoing progress effectively across all areas of the curriculum, to identify every child's next steps for learning accurately and help them achieve as well as possible.  The childminder does not consistently involve parents in their children's learning from the start to help build more effectively on children's development.  The childminder does not evaluate the quality of her provision effectively to help her to identify and address the weaknesses in her knowledge and skills.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children develop warm and trusting relationships with the childminder. They explore freely and laugh with her in their play.  The childminder maintains safe and secure play areas for children and helps them to learn about keeping safe. For example, she helps children to assess how safe they feel when using physical play equipment and to learn safety boundaries.  The childminder helps children to develop good social skills and to behave well. She is a positive role model who provides children with clear messages, encouragement and praise.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve the monitoring of children's progress to track their development accurately in all areas and prioritise their next steps for learning. 07/09/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 improve arrangements to exchange information with parents about children's development to ensure a consistent approach to supporting their learning from the start  develop self-evaluation to identify and address weaknesses in knowledge and skills, and improve outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the quality of the childminder's interaction with the children. She also discussed the effectiveness of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector observed the management of children's care routines.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records and talked to children at appropriate times.  The inspector sampled the childminder's documentation and discussed her knowledge of the requirements of the early years foundation stage.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has taken some steps to address the weaknesses raised at the last inspection. For example, she has formed links with the other settings children attend to exchange information about their learning and has started to evaluate her provision. However, self-evaluation is not sufficient to identify and successfully address the weaknesses in her practice. The childminder links with other childminders to help develop her knowledge and skills, for instance in using different assessment methods. She uses observations to plan activities linked to children's interests, and identifies some next steps for their learning. However, she does not assess children's learning accurately in all areas and is not always clear what she intends some children to learn next to build on their learning. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps up to date with current safeguarding practices. She has a good understanding of her responsibilities and the

procedures to follow if she has a concern about a child in her care.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder does not always assess children's progress accurately to help her fully support all children's progress. She misses opportunities to help older children learn about technology and encourage them to solve mathematical problems. The childminder does identify next steps for some children's learning. For example, she encourages children to play with others in larger groups and provides opportunities to write in readiness for school. The childminder engages children well in creative activities. Children use materials and tools to make cards for their family and models with dough. The childminder provides some challenge. For instance, she asks children to talk about what they are making and to share their home news. The childminder supports children's language appropriately and uses the correct words to build children's vocabulary.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder finds out about children's interests, home life and care routines from parents. However, she does not involve parents well in their children's learning from the start and does not share detailed information with them about their children's development. The childminder provides a good range of toys and activities that children choose for themselves and have space to play freely. However, she does not motivate children to learn more, such as providing opportunities for them to overcome challenge and solve simple problems. The childminder helps children to develop healthy lifestyles. For instance, she provides a variety of physical play activities and outings to support their physical skills and encourages healthy eating.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Although most children make typical progress for their age, weaknesses in the childminder's assessments do not enable her to ensure all children develop as well as possible. For example, children do not learn to solve problems or learn about technology. Overall, children gain some skills they need for their next stage in learning. For example, they learn to manage tasks themselves to build their independence and make choices confidently. Children count in play and learn to write letters of the alphabet correctly.
