This provision is good

 Children benefit from a calm and nurturing learning environment. They settle quickly into daily routines and relate well to each other and the childminder. Children's behaviour is good.  The childminder attends well to the needs of each child. Children make good progress from their individual starting points. They are ready for the next stage of their learning and development, including the move to school.  The childminder works well with other early years providers to help ensure continuity and progression in children's learning.  The childminder keeps parents well informed about their children's progress and well- being and provides ideas to help them support their children's learning at home.  Parents' feedback is very positive and reflects the good care and support their children receive from this attentive childminder.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder misses some opportunities to extend older children's vocabulary to support their language and communication skills further.  The childminder does not broaden children's understanding of the world around them as well as she could, particularly in relation to different people and their cultures.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 support older children's communication and language skills consistently throughout the day to aid their learning  broaden the range of opportunities for children to learn about other people and their cultures, to increase their knowledge of the wider world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children playing indoors and outdoors.  The inspector sampled the childminder's policies, procedures, risk assessments and children's development records.  The inspector discussed the childminder's procedures to safeguard children and her process for reflecting on her practice, including evidence of the suitability of adults living or working on the premises.  The inspector took into account the views, comments and suggestions of parents and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding requirements and the reporting procedures to support the welfare of all children in her care. The childminder seeks regular training opportunities to improve her practice. This is evident in the way she helps children play in her garden and the local park to develop their physical skills, explore different ground surfaces and socialise with others. She checks the progress of each child and, when identifying any gaps in children's learning, is confident to provide good support to help them catch up. The childminder takes into account the views of parents, children and outside professionals to review her practice and to continually provide a good service.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder generally provides a range of stimulating activities and resources to motivate children to learn. Planning is flexible and the childminder takes into account children's individual learning needs and interests to support their continuous learning and development. Children have good attitudes to learning and respond well to requests. The childminder engages children well in play. For example, children explore different paint colours and create imaginative printing pictures of their choice. The childminder shows children how to handle musical instruments and other resources with care. Children explore musical instruments safely and listen to sounds they make. The childminder reads stories with children. For example, older children use the language of books to talk about their favourite pictures and characters.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder talks to children in a calm and respectful manner. For instance, she uses praise effectively to boost children's confidence and self-esteem to good effect. Children grow in confidence and develop a good sense of belonging. The childminder helps children adopt healthy attitudes. For example, children learn about the importance of personal hygiene to reduce the spread of infections. The childminder carries out regular and thorough checks on her home to keep children safe. Through outings, for example, children learn to cross roads safely.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and any gaps in learning are closing. Young children learn new words and songs. Children listen attentively and play nicely with each other. They share toys and resources fairly and take turns. Older children learn to count, recognise numerals and use good mathematical language to describe the shapes and sizes of objects in the environment. They develop a good understanding of time as they talk about how the hands on the clock move to number 12, suggesting lunchtime.
