p.1

This provision is good

 Staff have secure understanding of how to assess and plan for children. They give children a variety of stimulating activities based on their interests and areas of learning. Staff evaluate regular observations of children to work out where children need to go to next and provide suitably challenging experiences. Children make good progress.  Staff manage children's behaviour well. For instance, they explain why certain behaviour is not acceptable and encourage children to behave in positive ways by praising them appropriately.  Staff work effectively with parents, for example, by giving them regular updates on the progress of their children.  The manager has good insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the nursery and has identified clear goals to build ongoing improvement.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff have not fully explored ways to enable older children to use a wide variety of materials and textures to support their sensory and creative development further.  Organisation of some resources in the room for younger children does not enable children to freely select some items for themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop more ways for older children to experience a wider range of resources to support their sensory and creative development further  review organisation of resources in the room for younger children to support their independence further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager of a group activity.  The inspector observed the interaction between staff and children and spoke with children when appropriate.  The inspector tracked the progress of several children.  The inspector looked at some documentation and held a discussion with the manager.  The inspector spoke to parents, staff and children and considered their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The manager keeps a close eye on nursery practice to assess the impact of teaching. For instance, she observes staff and gives feedback to improve practice. The manager checks planning and assessment to identify and close any gaps in learning. She gives advice and support to staff by meeting regularly with them as individuals. For example, staff attended a course on supporting two-year-olds which led to more effective practice. Safeguarding is effective. Staff know what to do if they are concerned about a child's welfare. They keep children safe. Staff work within ratios at all times and follow appropriate procedures in the event of infectious diseases. The manager carries out comprehensive background checks on staff to assess suitability for their roles.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff support children's understanding of the world well. For example, during group discussions children show good awareness of different types of weather and days of the week. Staff support children's early literacy skills effectively. For instance, children have good knowledge of letters and sounds and can recognise their names. Staff read stories to children in lively tones and support their understanding of story structure. Staff present children with good activities to aid their physical development, such as pouring and transferring water into different containers using different tools. They have good opportunities to climb, run and balance. Children have a good understanding of the natural world. For instance, they plant and grow vegetables at a nearby allotment and harvest these to give to the nursery cook who prepares the vegetables for meals.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children settle well and show a strong sense of belonging to the nursery. For instance, staff display photographs of children and their families on the walls and have warm, caring relationships with children which support their feelings of security and well-being. Children are confident and motivated to learn. Staff teach children safe ways to behave inside and outdoors. For example, they discuss road safety routines and show children how to use tools and materials with care. Staff teach children healthy daily habits, such as taking physical challenges outdoors and eating freshly prepared, nutritious meals and snacks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are good communicators. They engage well with tasks and concentrate on activities. Children have good early mathematical skills. They know different shape names and can count confidently. They learn to respect others from different cultural backgrounds. Children share and take turns well. They learn valuable skills for their future learning.
