This provision is good
The childminder and her assistant are kind and caring. Children form good emotional bonds with them and show a strong sense of security. The childminder gets to know children's abilities well and successfully identifies next steps in their learning. She provides challenging activities that help children make good progress in their learning. The childminder actively seeks additional help and support for children when needed. She works effectively with external agencies to narrow any emerging gaps in children's learning and development. The childminder forms effective partnerships with parents. The good two-way exchange of information contributes to continuity in children's care and learning. The childminder and assistant competently reflect on practice and make positive changes that benefit children. For example, they are in the process of improving the outdoor space so that older children can enjoy more boisterous play in a safe area
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not consistently provide opportunities for children to make their own choices, to extend their play and learning further. Occasionally, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities, such as at snack times, to build on children's understanding of good eating habits and safety.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

improve the organisation of resources to enable children to be even more independent in their play and learning improve the organisation of some everyday routines to further develop children's awareness of good eating habits and how to stay safe.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed children's activities indoors. The inspector sampled children's learning records and other relevant documentation. The inspector took account of the views of parents from written feedback and the childminder's questionnaires. The inspector discussed childcare practice with the childminder and her assistant.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant have a good understanding of how to recognise and deal with child protection concerns. They maintain a safe and secure environment for children. The childminder ensures that the assistant is suitable to work with children. She makes sure he has a good understanding of his role and responsibility. For example, the childminder coaches, supports and monitors his practice. The childminder and assistant continue to improve their knowledge. For example, they have made good use of information gained on a recent training course to improve children's health. The childminder competently monitors children's assessments, and teaching and planning to help ensure all children are achieving as expected.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides activities that engage and interest children. Children thoroughly enjoy activities, such as singing and moving to music. The childminder extends young children's language skills successfully. For example, she encourages them to listen and join in with words in songs. Young children showed good understanding when they copied actions in songs, such as putting hands on heads and pointing to parts of the room. The childminder builds on children's coordination and encourages them to do things themselves. For example, she encourages children to put together train tracks and use toy tools. The childminder gives very young children plenty of opportunities to crawl and explore toys with switches and buttons. The childminder successfully reinforces children's mathematical skills, such as counting.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder and assistant work well as a team. They create a homely atmosphere where children settle quickly and feel safe. Young children happily go to the childminder or assistant for reassurance when they need it. Babies enjoy cuddles with the assistant and smile happily when he bounces them on his knee. The childminder is a good role model and teaches children to share resources. She helps children develop a good understanding of what is acceptable behaviour. The childminder encourages healthy living. For example, she provides nutritious home-cooked meals and plenty of exercise.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children develop well in the key skills they need to secure future learning and be ready for school. They have good levels of independence and self-confidence. Children play well with others and increase their social skills. They enjoy learning experiences, such as playing with balls and tunnels. Children become absorbed in their favourite activities, such as looking at books and playing with a toy guitar. They develop a good awareness of how to manage risks, such as when using large outdoor play equipment.
