p.1

This provision is inadequate

 The childminder has failed to inform Ofsted of significant changes to persons over the age of 16 years living on the premises. She has not supplied the necessary information to enable all required suitability checks to be carried out.  The childminder's self-evaluation is not effective enough to help her identify areas where there are weaknesses in practice, to help improve outcomes for children.  The childminder does not gather enough information from parents about what children can already do when they first start attending, to help inform the planning of activities and experiences to support their learning from the outset.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder models language to sustain children's interest and promote their speaking and listening skills. She is skilled in talking to children about what they are doing and she introduces new words to extend their vocabulary. Children listen well and follow instructions. They are given lots of time to think, answer and ask questions.  The childminder has a good understanding of child development. She monitors children's progress to identify what they need to learn next. She plans activities that are tailored to individual children's needs and supports them to make good progress.  The childminder helps children to learn how to interact with others, such as sharing and turn taking. This has a positive impact on their ability to build and sustain friendships.  Children are developing their independence in managing their own care needs. The childminder recognises the importance of this and provides them with encouragement.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 supply the relevant information to Ofsted to ensure that suitability checks can be completed for all persons over the age of 16 years living on the premises. 14/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 use self-evaluation more effectively to identify all areas for improvement, including professional development and training, to help improve outcomes for children  extend information gathered from parents to include children's prior knowledge and skills when they start at the setting, to help plan swiftly for their next steps in learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of some persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate

The arrangements for safeguarding are ineffective. The childminder has failed to inform Ofsted of adults moving into her home. She has not supplied the relevant information for completing the suitability checks required for persons living on the premises. She has not obtained an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for this adult, to fully safeguard children. The childminder has attended safeguarding training. She knows how to report any concerns she may have about a child in her care. The childminder evaluates her practice to support children's learning and development. However, she does not extend this self-assessment to ensure that she continues to meet all statutory requirements. The childminder takes all reasonable steps to engage parents in their children's learning. She understands her role in working together with other settings that children attend.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder promotes and extends children's learning. She understands how children learn and develop and provides stimulating activities and experiences across all areas of learning. The childminder works with parents to find out about the care needs of children when they first start attending. However, she does not ask about where children are in their learning and development to help her gain an in-depth understanding of what they can do and plan activities effectively. The childminder is enthusiastic and supports children well to use their own experiences, such as in their imaginative play. For example, they have great fun as they pretend to go out to work with their laptops. Children confidently explore and investigate their surroundings.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

Due to the weaknesses in leadership and management, the safety and welfare of the children attending is not assured. However, the childminder provides a welcoming environment where children make choices about their own play. She supports children's independence skills. Children learn about safety. For example, they talk about how to cross the road safely and the childminder encourages them to think about and manage their own risks, further developing their understanding. Children are happy and enjoy being with their friends and the childminder. The childminder is a good role model for children. She teaches them about healthy lifestyles, such as washing their hands before meals and after using the toilet. Children are polite and use their manners with little or no prompting from the childminder. The childminder offers praise and encouragement, supporting children's growing confidence and sense of self-esteem.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress from their starting points. Children are settled, happy and form secure emotional bonds with the childminder. Children are confident and curious individuals who are interested in the world around them. Through their play and daily routines, children are obtaining the key skills, attitudes and dispositions they need for their future learning. As the childminder reads a story, children cuddle into her and listen with intent.
