Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC482275 1 SC482275

p.1

Information about this children’s home

The home is registered to care for up to four children and young people who may have some emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. The home is part of a large national organisation based in the north of England. This is currently the only children’s home in the south west region.

p.1

This monitoring visit

This children’s home was judged to have declined in effectiveness at the interim inspection on 22/03/2017. Concerns were such that compliance notices were served. Following that inspection, further significant practice shortfalls were identified leading to the service being suspended. Two monitoring visits have taken place in the suspension period. There are currently no children living at this home due to the action taken by Ofsted.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Changes in the leadership and management of this service in recent months have had a positive impact. A robust action plan has been put in place and leaders and managers are driving this forward with vigour. This action plan has included significant appropriate training and development opportunities for the staff. As a result, staff state that they feel more confident and supported in their practice. During this inspection, relevant and good-quality training was taking place. The staff were fully engaged in the training and were both supportive and challenging of each other’s views and values that underpin their practice. The team members presented as cohesive, supportive and respectful of one another. They are motivated to ensure that children who come to live at this home receive consistent, safe and good care. The positive morale within the team is remarkable. Further training is planned over the next few weeks. Leaders and managers are

confident that this training, coupled with good-quality supervision, will ensure that any remaining gaps in required knowledge will be addressed. Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC482275 2 Leaders and managers are child focused. They have been successful in ensuring that their values and views on child-centred care are adopted by the staff team. These views have become a shared culture. Leaders and managers have also ensured that the environment has been improved. Significant changes have been made to the aesthetics of the home. The manager advocated for a new kitchen, which was not part of the original plan. During this visit, the finishing touches were being made to the kitchen. These changes will provide children with a modern and nurturing environment. The improvements in the presentation of the home are impressive. One of the concerns stemming from the previous inspection was how isolated this

p.1

This monitoring visit

service was in terms of the wider organisation. Leaders and managers have worked hard to ensure that there is a supportive infrastructure in place to address this concern. The manager reports that the links he now has in the locality are positive and ensures that this home is recognised within the wider organisation. In addition, the newly appointed responsible individual has spent significant time at the home. The relationship between her and the manager is positive and they have a shared vision for the future that they are driving forward.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Following this monitoring visit Ofsted found that the grounds for suspension of the children’s home no longer apply.
