Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC068277 1 SC068277

p.1

Information about this children’s home

This children’s home is owned by a large national private provider. It is registered to provide care and accommodation for up to six children and young people who have emotional and/or behavioural difficulties.

p.1

This monitoring visit

This inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000. The home was judged inadequate at the full inspection on 6 June 2017. Ofsted carried out an unannounced visit to the home on 28 June 2017 to monitor compliance with one of the two compliance notices issued following the last full inspection. The monitoring visit found that the compliance notice was not met. The compliance notice required the manager to take steps to ensure that staff physically follow and locate young people as far as practicable when they go missing from care, and that all staff working in the home work consistently together in this regard. Since the last inspection, the manager has ensured that there is a missing from home protocol in place, which he shared with staff in a team meeting on 14 June 2017. The manager has scheduled ‘missing’ training for staff on 4 July 2017. Despite these steps, evidence was found during the monitoring visit that staff are

not consistently working together in following missing from home protocols or young people’s individual risk assessments. Staff are not consistently reporting young people missing at the times recorded in their individual missing from home risk assessments, or being proactive in trying to locate young people as quickly as possible. Staff interviewed state that they search for young people, but there have been 38 missing episodes in June 2017 and, in the missing records and logbooks, there was only one record of staff searching for the young person who was missing. This does not demonstrate that staff are being proactive in trying to locate young people who are missing, or are working consistently together in following young people’s missing from home risk assessments or the home’s missing from home protocol. It is Inspection report for children’s home - monitoring visit: SC068277 2 Ofsted’s view that staff are not taking effective action to follow and search for young

people when they go missing from care, therefore not minimising the risk to young people or protecting them from harm. A further compliance notice has been issued which details that staff must consistently follow young people’s missing from home risk assessments.
