This provision is good

 The childminder has developed extremely caring and respectful relationships with the children in her care. Behaviour is exemplary. Children are polite and friendly and are learning to take turns and share. Their emerging independence is expertly supported.  Children are cared for in an exciting and stimulating play environment that covers the areas of learning and development. A wide range of activities away from the childminder's home are used well to enhance children's learning.  Children who prefer to learn outdoors are supported well. They have free access to the childminder's garden, even on wet days, and enjoy the range of resources and activities outside that supports all areas of development.  The childminder demonstrates a drive to ensure she provides the best for all children in her care. She values ongoing professional development and uses new learning well to enhance her provision.  Excellent partnerships with parents are in place which ensure that they are well

informed about, and supported with their children's ongoing learning and well-being.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally during messy play the childminder focuses more on her own ideas and as a result, children do not have enough opportunities to extend areas of their interest and fascination.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 give children more time and opportunities to explore, follow and share their own ideas during messy play.

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed children at play and evaluated activities with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's observations and assessment records, evidence of the suitability of household members and a range of other documentation, including safeguarding procedures and accident records.  The inspector took into account the views of parents through written feedback.  The inspector talked with the childminder about how she evaluates and improves her service. She read the childminder's self-evaluation document before the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is aware of the action to take should she have any concerns about the welfare of a child in her care. She undertakes regular risk assessments to identify and minimise hazards to children. A broad range of policies and procedures is in place which the childminder implements and shares with parents. The childminder reflects on her practice, making use of information from professional publications and the regular feedback she gains from parents. Parents speak very highly of the childminder, praising the excellent balance of care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's language development effectively. She naturally holds meaningful conversations with children, supporting their pronunciation and extending their vocabulary. Opportunities for early mathematical development are plentiful, as they climb stairs or play with trains children freely count. Ideas about full, empty, over and through are woven into games. The childminder plans the learning environment very well. Resources and games are left out, allowing children to return to them and consolidate their learning. The childminder keeps detailed observations and evaluates the progress children are making. She puts into place robust next steps for children's learning to support their ongoing development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

There is a high priority on developing children's confidence and social skills. The childminder makes effective use of local groups and outings to ensure children have regular opportunities, to engage with other children and adults. Children's emerging independence is strongly supported. Time, space and encouragement are given to children as they competently put on boots or wash their hands. Children freely select resources. The childminder collects detailed information about children's needs when they first start with her. She works well to support children to be emotionally prepared for the move on to other childcare providers.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are motivated and engaged learners who on the whole spend sustained periods of time engaged in their play. They are very confident at engaging others in their games. Children are making excellent progress in their language development. As they look through photograph books they show high levels of imagination and memory as they talk about the pictures and what they did. Children show determination and perseverance and are not set back when things do not go to plan in their play. Children are making very good progress and learning the skills needed in readiness for the next stage of their learning.
