Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 Risk assessments are not thorough enough to ensure all potential hazards are identified and minimised.  The childminder does not maintain accurate records of all accidents and injuries.  The childminder is not effective when supporting younger children's speaking skills to help extend their communication and language abilities. Children do not make as much progress as possible, particularly in this aspect of their learning.  The childminder's professional development is not focused well enough on developing her teaching practice to continually promote improvement in children's learning.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children develop a strong emotional attachment with the childminder and are happy and content in her care. The childminder is calm and caring and children relate well to her.  The childminder builds positive relationships with parents. She regularly shares information with them about their child's day. Parents speak highly of the childminder and the care she provides.  The outdoor area is used well to foster enjoyment and learning and effectively supports children who prefer to play and learn outside.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure risk assessments are effective and cover all areas of the provision used by children, with particular regard to making all medication inaccessible to children 08/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that a written record of all accidents, injuries and first-aid treatment is completed in full and that parents are informed of such incidents on the same day, or as soon as reasonably practicable 08/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

 provide effective support for younger children to ensure that they make good progress in their communication and language development. 08/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 enhance professional development and focus more precisely on developing teaching practice to continually promote improvement in the quality of learning experiences offered to children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder updates her knowledge of child protection and safeguarding through training. She is aware of the signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect and the procedures to follow should she have concerns. However, the childminder does not take all reasonable steps to ensure children's safety. While accessible medications were removed and made safe during the inspection, risk assessments have not been effectively implemented to ensure potential hazards, such as these, are identified and minimised. Most recommendations agreed at the last inspection have been addressed. The childminder has joined a childminding support service and accesses training to keep some of her knowledge up to date. However, her arrangements for professional development are not focused enough on raising the quality of her teaching practice, particularly with regard to developing her skills when promoting

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Although the childminder provides a suitable range of activities to promote children's learning, she does not consistently notice younger children's attempts to communicate, or adequately support them to further develop their early speaking skills. Children enjoy outdoor play. They spend time moving from one activity to another and are supported by the childminder to become engaged in most activities. Children have fun exploring and experimenting with play dough and mark-making resources. They draw on the easel with chalks and manipulate dough as they empty and fill pots. Children particularly enjoy choosing books. They are eager to help turn the pages, and listen with interest as the childminder points out pictures and identifies different animals. The childminder uses a tracking system to help her identify gaps in children's learning and plans some appropriate activities to help narrow these gaps.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Risk assessments are not thorough enough and the childminder has inconsistent procedures for accurately recording all accidents. This means that the promotion of children's welfare requires improvement. However, the childminder supports children's emotional well-being. Children's confidence and self-esteem is good. The childminder praises children for their good behaviour and calmly and swiftly manages any minor disputes. She actively promotes children's physical skills and ensures they have opportunities for fresh air and exercise daily.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Although children make steady progress, they are not supported to make the best possible progress in their learning and development, particularly communication and language. Nevertheless, children are beginning to acquire some of the basic skills needed for their future learning. Children are keen to learn and solve problems. Younger children enjoy discovering how objects work. They confidently explore and make choices about their play, generally choosing from a range of stimulating resources.
