This provision is good
The childminder is caring and friendly. Children respond easily to her calm, reassuring manner. The childminder works effectively with parents to support children's physical and emotional well-being. Children make good progress from their starting points. The childminder understands children's individual styles of learning. She provides interesting activities based on children's interests that motivate their learning. The childminder provides exciting resources to support children's learning. For example, children enjoy playing with laminated picture puppets relating to a favourite story and develop their imaginative ideas well. The childminder continues to develop her knowledge of childcare and learning well. For instance, she has completed training that helped her understand more about identifying children's specific educational needs and the support available to help them.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Although the childminder monitors children's achievements, she does not use her assessment systems as well as possible, to consistently identify their next steps of development in all areas of their learning. Although the childminder often praises children and helps them feel valued, she does not always successfully help them to share and take care of toys, and understand fully about keeping themselves and others safe.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

make more use of monitoring and assessment systems to identify children's next steps of development more consistently in all areas of their learning provide more opportunities to encourage children's understanding of sharing and caring for their toys, and keeping themselves and others safe.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed children's interactions indoors, and discussed their learning and development with the childminder. The inspector viewed documentation, such as operational policies, procedures and required records, including those for suitability. The inspector undertook a joint observation of a play activity with the childminder. The inspector took into account the written views of parents. The inspector discussed self-evaluation with the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge of safeguarding up to date and has a clear understanding of her responsibilities to protect children's welfare and who to contact about any concerns. The childminder regularly evaluates on her practice and is keen to develop it further still. For example, she regularly shares information about children's activities with their parents, and has identified how to improve this liaison and provide more ideas to encourage children's learning at home. The childminder works well with other settings children attend and liaises with them about children's development to promote a consistent approach for their learning needs.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder supports children's communication effectively, including those who are learning English as an additional language. For example, children listen to a favourite story and show excitement when they recognise the familiar rhyming words at the end of each sentence. The childminder actively encourages children's early mathematical awareness, their fine-motor skills and enjoyment of exploring different textures. For instance, children push their hands into the tray of an orange and red bubble mixture with great delight. They use small pipettes, cups, scoops and their hands to fill and empty a large container. Children say the mixture is 'orange, strawberry colour and is sticky'. The childminder supports children's imagination and understanding of simple technology effectively. For example, children concentrate well putting the colourful, magnetic construction shapes together and say they have made a 'blueberry flavoured ice cream'.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder encourages children's physical strength well and they develop positive attitudes to keeping healthy. For example, children like going to the beach with the childminder, where they hunt for shells and pebbles and have fun splashing in the water. Younger children cruise happily around the furniture, quickly gaining the confidence to stand and then walk independently. Children like kicking footballs around and learn to control the direction of the ball. The childminder promotes children's awareness of healthy foods well. For instance, they enjoy healthy snacks of fruit and yoghurts. Older children carefully cut up a banana using a safety knife.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children gain the necessary skills to help them with their move to pre-school and school. Children develop good independence skills. For example, older children put on their shoes themselves before going outside. Younger children know to take their plates and cups to the sink after meals. Children show an interest in making marks and form some recognisable shapes. For instance, they draw faces with eyes, a nose and mouth in the sand when they visit the beach with the childminder.
