This provision is good

 The experienced childminder demonstrates her commitment to providing the best possible care and learning for children. Parents feel well informed about children's progress and development. Children are eager to tell parents about the interesting things they do at the childminder's home and on outings.  The childminder has made good progress in improving her provision since the last inspection. She plans and implements changes that help to promote children's progress and well-being.  The childminder skilfully teaches children new words and extends their understanding. For example, children become deeply involved in rolling small cars down a slope and the childminder uses words about speed and distance in her thoughtful conversations with them.  The childminder makes regular observations of children's learning. She accurately assesses their progress and development and shares this with parents.  Children demonstrate that they feel happy and secure in the childminder's company.

p.1

This provision is good

They know that she is interested in their ideas and news and that she wants to talk and play with them.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasion, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities to extend children's early writing skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen techniques for demonstrating early writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during daily routines and activities. She assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector discussed a planned activity with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the childminder's suitability to work with children.  The inspector took account of the views of parents and carers.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder works hard to make sure that children benefit from their time in her provision. Children make good progress. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder updates her knowledge and understanding of child protection requirements. She knows what to do if she is concerned that a child may be at risk of abuse or neglect. The childminder takes effective steps to improve her practice. For example, she found out information about strategies for promoting positive behaviour that she implemented effectively in her provision. The childminder identifies and minimises hazards in her home to provide a safe environment for children to explore.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows what children need to learn next. She inventively plans challenging activities and children participate with enthusiasm. For example, the childminder hides the letters of children's names around the garden and children go to find them. She skilfully gives clues that help children to learn and understand words about position. Children read and say the sounds that letters represent. They work with the childminder to put the letters in the right order for their name. This helps to promote children's early reading well. The childminder helps children to develop physical strength and precision. For example, they roll out modelling dough and use a computer mouse.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children develop caring relationships with the childminder. She encourages children to be curious and imaginative in their play and they become eager learners. The childminder establishes consistent boundaries for children's behaviour. She uses effective strategies that encourage children to follow rules and routines. For example, children know that they must tidy up the toys before a new game can begin. The childminder teaches children to be safe. For example, children know why they must wear a hat when the weather is hot. The childminder helps children to eat a healthy diet. For example, they measure out the right amount of pasta for one portion.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to learning that prepare them well to start school. Children can predict and recall events in familiar stories. They know how to look in books to find out information. They recognise their name and other familiar words. Children read numbers and count. They know some of the purposes that numbers are used for. Children develop self-control relative to their age. They can follow instructions and know the rules of games and activities. Children understand and accept that other people may have different preferences and ideas to their own. Children use the toilet independently and know why they must wash their hands.
