This provision is good
The caring and affectionate childminder supports children's emotional development well. Children settle quickly and form strong bonds with her. They are happy, confident and ready to learn. The childminder knows children well. She regularly assesses their progress and tailors activities to meet their individual needs. She is rigorous in targeting areas where they may need extra support. For example, she plans specific activities to target children's language development. Children progress well from their starting points. The childminder is a good role model for children and sets consistent expectations for good behaviour. Children learn to share and take turns well. They play cooperatively and enjoy one another's company. The childminder works closely with parents and other settings that children attend to ensure continuity of care and learning. Parents speak very highly of the childminder's

services and the care their children receive. The childminder evaluates her provision regularly and continually seeks ways to improve her service. She seeks the views of parents, children and other professionals, and makes effective changes which help to improve outcomes for children.

It is not yet outstanding because:
At times, the childminder does not make the best use of opportunities to support and extend children's pre-writing skills.

Inspection activities
The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times during the day. The inspector looked at evidence of the childminder's qualifications and suitability checks. The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and the children throughout the inspection. The inspector observed an activity and evaluated its effectiveness with the childminder. The inspector spoke to a small number of parents and read written feedback from them.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder ensures that her safeguarding knowledge is up to date, for example, by regularly attending training. She has a secure knowledge of procedures to follow should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder carries out effective risk assessments to ensure activities she provides are safe, while enabling children to take age-appropriate risks and develop independence. The childminder is proactive in extending her professional knowledge and skills to better meet the needs of the children. For instance, she has attended training about physical development and this has helped her to provide more support for children where needed.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder uses her knowledge of children's individual interests and next steps well. She adapts activities to engage all children and sets individual challenges to suit their different abilities. For example, during a role-play shopping activity, she supports younger children to pretend through modelling play and teaches older children about the use of money. The childminder provides varied activities and children develop a good understanding of the natural world. For instance, they enjoy observing frogspawn turn into tadpoles and frogs, and caterpillars into butterflies. The childminder extends children's early mathematical skills well. For instance, children learn to count and compare sizes while playing with stones. The childminder keeps parents well informed of their children's progress and offers suggestions to enhance their learning and development at home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment where children feel comfortable to explore and learn. She supports them sensitively and they try out new experiences with confidence and keenly engage in learning. The childminder supports children's social skills well. Children behave well and are polite and helpful. They learn to say 'please' and 'thank you' at appropriate times and help to tidy toys. The childminder effectively supports children's understanding of healthy lifestyles. She provides nutritious meals and encourages them to try a variety of foods. The childminder offers children plenty of opportunities to develop their physical skills. For instance, they enjoy practising for a sports day. They learn new skills and gain confidence in their physical ability.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress and acquire skills needed for the next stage in their learning. They learn self-care skills from an early age. For example, younger children eat independently and older children learn to dress themselves. Children display good early reading skills. They love to look at books independently and create their own stories.
