outdoor area to provide children with more physically challenging experiences.

It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not make the most of opportunities during children's self-initiated play to fully extend children's learning. Although the childminder works well in partnership with parents, she does not provide them with enough detailed information about how to support children's learning at home.

Inspection activities
The inspector had a tour of the setting. The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector spoke to children and took account of parents' written feedback. The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection and looked at relevant documentation, such as the fire evacuation procedures and children's learning records.

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder keeps up to date with Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures and has a good understanding of how to report a concern about children's welfare. She is committed to professional development and works with her local authority early years consultant to develop her provision. The childminder has developed strong links with her local community. For example, she attends a local playgroup and builds strong professional relationships with the local nursery school teachers. Parents comment highly about the quality of care and education that the childminder provides. They are particularly pleased with how she takes on board their suggestions for improvement.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder gathers information about children's interests and stage of development on entry. This helps her plan challenging activities from the outset. She has recently introduced an online system for recording and monitoring children's learning and progress. This has improved communication with parents about what their children are learning in the setting. The childminder understands how to develop children's language successfully. For example, she provides a commentary for children during planned activities to extend their vocabulary. Children are developing good mathematical skills. They learn about number values as the childminder counts shapes and threads them on to string. She goes on to talk about more than and less than. The childminder regularly reviews children's progress and discusses this with parents. She identifies gaps in learning effectively and plans activities to help children catch up.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are well cared for in a nurturing, homely environment. Children show high levels of kindness towards each other and the childminder. For example, children stop playing and offer to help the childminder to sweep the floor. Children learn about healthy lifestyles. They know to wash their hands before they eat and select from a wide range of healthy snacks. Children comment on how much they enjoy the childminder's food. The childminder encourages children to develop their physical skills. She plans regular trips to the local playground and supervises children well, as they play on larger equipment.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are keen and motivated learners. They enjoy pretend play and create a doctor's surgery with dolls. They play well together, taking turns to examine the dolls and discuss what could be wrong with them. They confidently explore the outdoor environment and play in a toy car. They have active imaginations, pretending that they are on their way to work and stop to have lunch at the playhouse. Children are making good progress in their learning. The skills they are acquiring prepare them well for their next stage in learning, including the move on to school.
