This provision is good

 Children benefit from a warm and caring environment, helping them to develop secure attachments to the childminder. These strong relationships help to support children's emotional well-being.  Children become confident and articulate talkers. The childminder encourages conversations and listens to what the children say. She repeats words and sentences back to them to help them to learn correct pronunciation.  The childminder supports children to develop their social skills. They have frequent opportunities to play alongside other children and meet a variety of other people.  Children's behaviour is good. They are learning to work together and understand how to share their toys and take their turn.  The childminder listens to the views of parents and identifies training that increases her knowledge of good teaching practice. This helps her to ensure the outcomes for children are consistently good.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 In some instances, the information the childminder gathers from parents is not detailed enough to help her to plan activities that build on children's learning experiences at home.  At times, the childminder has a tendency to do things for children that they could do for themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase the consistency of information gathered from parents about what children experience at home to sharpen planning and build on what they already know  make the most of all opportunities to enhance children's independence and learn do things for themselves.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed childminder's interactions with the children indoors and outdoors. She spoke with the childminder and the children at convenient times during the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder and assessed the quality of teaching.  A range of relevant documentation was sampled, including children's records, the childminder's training and evidence of suitability of family members.  The views of parents were taken into account through written feedback.  The inspector looked at areas of the home used by the children and the resources available to them.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder updates her policies and procedures regularly and keeps up to date with current child protection guidance. She undertakes training to widen her understanding of newer initiatives, such as the 'Prevent' duty. The childminder knows how to identify and report any concerns she has about children's welfare. Children's progress is monitored well. The childminder makes regular observations to help her to identify any areas where children need extra help. Parents are warm and positive about the childminder. They say she offers a broad range of activities and provides a flexible service.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes and assesses the children as they play to help her ensure they all develop according to their individual expectations. She provides parents with regular updates on their children's progress. Children who speak English as an additional language are supported well. The childminder focuses on their English skills but provides opportunities for children to use and hear their home languages. Children are encouraged to develop their physical skills. For example, the childminder provides creative collage activities where children pick up and place small pieces. An enticing selection of books supports children's interest in literacy. The childminder reads with them daily, sharing stories and songs they all enjoy.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder collects detailed information from parents when children first start, helping her to meet their initial care needs. She offers flexible settling-in opportunities and provides children with resources that are familiar and enjoyable. Children have frequent access to the garden and have daily opportunities for outdoor exercise. The childminder works with parents to ensure meals and snacks are healthy and balanced. Children learn to take risks in their play as, for example, they clamber up the steps of the large climbing frame. Overall, resources are organised effectively so that children can make independent choices in their play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop the confidence to initiate their own play and express their ideas. They learn to manage their personal hygiene independently. Children name mathematical shapes accurately and are beginning to count out loud and match objects to colour and size. They enjoy using a variety of resources to make marks, such as paints, pencils and glue.
