Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not notified Ofsted that she has recently made changes to people working on the premises. Suitability checks on her assistant have not been carried out; however, her assistant does not have unsupervised access to children. This is also a breach of the Childcare Register.  Teaching is not fully effective. The childminder does not have a good enough understanding of teaching to ensure children benefit from consistently good-quality learning experiences. Children do not make the best possible progress in their learning and development.  The childminder does not organise the environment well enough. She has not fully developed a range of resources to help her keep children motivated and interested in their play and learning.  The childminder does not evaluate her practice effectively enough to help her identify where changes can be made to help improve outcomes for children.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are settled and happy in the childminder's care. She plays with them and shows she enjoys their company, which helps to boost their self-esteem.  The childminder is aware of the need to keep children in her care safe. For example, she carries out risk assessments to help her provide a safe environment.  The childminder knows the children and their interests well. For example, she sings to children and they clearly demonstrate their enjoyment.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 provide Ofsted with the required information so that suitability checks can be made to ensure people working on the childminding premises are suitable 01/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

 improve teaching and make effective use of planning to provide consistently challenging and stimulating activities and experiences for children to help promote their learning and development. 14/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 make better use of the learning environment and improve the organisation of toys and the range of resources for children to help support their learning and development  improve the evaluation of the provision to monitor and raise the quality of practice and outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children as they played, listened to their interactions and talked with them at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder in relation to observations of children's play, learning and progress.  The inspector sampled documentation, including children's records and evidence of suitability checks.  The inspector took note of parents' written views.  The inspector viewed the areas of the childminder's house and garden used for the care of children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has failed to notify Ofsted that she has recently employed an assistant. This means Ofsted has been unable to undertake the required checks to determine the suitability of her assistant to work with children. However, the childminder ensures that her assistant is not left unsupervised with the children. This significantly reduces the risk to children's welfare. Safeguarding is effective. Since her last inspection, the childminder has increased her knowledge of child protection. For example, she has attended training to help her identify any signs that a child may be at risk. She has secure procedures to report any concerns about children's welfare. The childminder does consider the quality of her provision. However, this is not effective enough to ensure she continues to improve her practice and raises outcomes for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder makes observations and monitors children's progress. She makes plans to build on children's skills and further the progress they make. However, she does not use these plans effectively and children do not make the progress that they could do. The childminder supports children's physical development. For example, she rolls a ball to encourage young children to attempt to crawl after it. The childminder encourages children's communication development. For example, on the way back from pre-school the childminder and children play games to identify the colours of cars.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Although there are basic resources available for children, sometimes the organisation of resources and the environment does not allow children to find what they want to play with. For example, they empty the cluttered toy box onto the floor when looking for a specific toy. The childminder encourages parents and professionals at other settings children attend to share information about the children. For example, parents said that young children liked stacking cups at home. The childminder then made sure she found cups for the children to play with in her setting. This supports consistency in children's care and learning. Older children enjoy playing outdoors. They help to water plants in the garden and learn about the natural world.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children learn basic skills that will support them as they move on to school, although there are weaknesses in the quality of teaching. For example, they learn how to put on their own socks and shoes and fasten their coats. They learn about good hygiene, for example, when they wash their hands before eating. Children show they are interested and motivated learners. For example, young children explore how to make sounds by banging objects together. Older children develop their own experiences and imagination, for example, as they explore what happens when they pour dry pasta down the slide.
