This provision is good

 The childminder understands how children learn and develop. She monitors their progress effectively, makes regular observations of their achievements and accurately identifies their next stage of learning. Children enjoy their learning and make good progress in readiness for school.  The childminder provides a warm and caring environment where children feel happy and safe. She provides them with good support and builds on their confidence and emotional well-being to a very high standard.  Partnerships with parents are strong and contribute very effectively to the good progress children make. For example, the childminder holds regular discussions with parents to find out about children's ongoing development at home and readily implements their ideas into her practice.  The childminder reflects effectively on her practice to identify aspects for further improvement. Her future plans focus sharply on meeting the needs of the children and

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder monitors learning to identify any gaps but does not extend this to identify where children are making slower rates of progress.  The childminder does not consistently challenge children to think independently and work things out themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 increase ways of challenging children to think and solve problems for themselves during their everyday activities, to further encourage their critical thinking skills  build on the monitoring of children's learning to identify slower rates of progress.

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with the children.  The inspector discussed the children's development with the childminder.  The inspector discussed the process of self-evaluation with the childminder and how she obtains the views of all those that use her provision.  The inspector examined a selection of documentation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is clear on the steps she must take if she has a concern about a child. She carries out risk assessments and ensures that her home is safe for the children in her care. The childminder dedicates herself to driving continual improvements in her provision. For example, she seeks advice from other childminders for peer support and to share ideas to enhance her practice further. The childminder effectively monitors children's progress and swiftly addresses any gaps in their learning. The childminder establishes partnerships with staff at other settings children attend, such as local pre-schools. She exchanges information regularly with them to promote consistency in children's care and learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is enthusiastic and interacts very well with children as they play, which supports children's good progress. For example, when children are playing with water beads the childminder carefully weaves in counting and literacy development opportunities at appropriate points. This challenges children further in their learning. The childminder selects activities that are based on children's interests and what they know. For example, children build on their counting skills through enjoyable activities, such as sorting numbered stones and working out how many jugs of water it takes to fill a tub.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder promotes health well. For example, she works with parents to make sure the foods she offers reflect their cultural preferences. The childminder is a positive role model who has clear expectations of behaviour. Children behave well, share toys and show great kindness to one another. The childminder supports children's independence well. For example, they learn to wash their hands and serve themselves from a range of healthy snacks. Children have daily access to the outdoor area and trips into the community where they have many opportunities to develop their physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children, including those who are who are learning English as an additional language, make good progress from their individual starting points. They are confident, independent and active learners who make their own decisions and follow their own ideas. Children listen carefully and follow instructions. They know that sounds and letters link and that print carries meaning. Children quickly develop a wide range of skills that they need to aid their future learning and their eventual move on to school.
