This provision is good

 The childminder makes effective use of training and networking with other professionals to help her ensure children make the best possible start. For example, she has used ideas to improve children's mathematical understanding through traditional stories and exciting resources.  Effective partnerships with parents enable the childminder to follow children's home routines consistently, such as toilet training, meeting children's care needs well.  The childminder gains good information from parents when children start. This helps her to plan exciting activities that support children's interests. She makes accurate assessments of children's progress, helping them to make good progress from their initial starting points.  The childminder has improved how she evaluates the setting since her last inspection. She accurately recognises areas for improvement, for instance, extending sensory play for younger children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasion, the childminder interrupts children's play and does not give them the time to become more deeply involved in their chosen activities.  The childminder does not make the best use of her good range of resources to support older children's early writing skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide further opportunities for children to explore their play without interruption  make the best use of resources to encourage older children's early writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children and discussed children's learning as they played inside and in the garden.  The inspector considered the written views of parents.  The inspector spoke with the childminder about her understanding of the early years foundation stage.  The inspector sampled documentation, including the childminder's self-evaluation, children's assessment records, and policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder maintains all required documentation accurately and confidentially. The childminder and her assistant have a good awareness of child protection issues and procedures to follow should they have a concern. There are good arrangements to support the assistant's professional skills, for example, through online seminars. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively, identifying and addressing any gaps in their learning promptly. She provides parents with a wealth of information about their children's learning, so they can work with her consistently.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's communication and language skills well. For example, she questions children effectively and corrects children's mispronunciations sensitively. The childminder uses her training effectively to encourage children to listen well, for instance, to the various sounds in the environment as they walk to school. Children follow instruction well, for example, to use the moulds in the sand. The childminder acknowledges that children have created a car in a different way to her but both are right, valuing children's attempts well. Children show great fascination in a range of sensory experiences, such as blowing and chasing bubbles. They show interest in the world around them, showing great excitement when they find spiders' webs in the garden.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are confident and motivated to learn in the childminder's welcoming and well- resourced homely environment. They form strong bonds with the childminder, who knows them well. She consistently offers them choices, for example, at snack time. Children are encouraged to assess risk for themselves to support their understanding of safe practices. For example, they know that broken pieces of the train track may pose a risk and ask the childminder to put them on a high shelf. Children play well together and, when conflicts arise, the childminder supports them well to share and take turns.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain good skills that prepare them well for their next steps in learning and eventual move to school. They are confident communicators and very keen to explain how things work, such as the lift on the toy animal house. They solve problems effectively, for example, describing how the lift will not work because the 'cat is too big and will not fit', using mathematical language well in their play. Children gain good independence, for example, they choose which fruit they would like for snack and prepare it themselves. Children listen well to stories and make observations, such as 'the wolf is coming down the chimney like Father Christmas'.
