This provision is good

 The staff are consistent in their approach to behaviour management. For example, they teach children to use 'kind hands' as they play to help prevent snatching of toys. Children behave well.  The provider works closely with staff to review the progress children are making. They identify areas to work on to help narrow any gaps with children's learning. Children make good progress towards their learning goals.  Staff are skilled in adapting activities to fit the space they have available. For example, they provide small water trays for the children to be able to explore and help to develop their interest in where sea animals live.  Staff work closely with other professionals caring for children. They regularly share information about children's progress so they can all work together to help progress their learning and development. This helps to provide good continuity of care for the children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not consistently extend children's mathematical development through the activities they offer.  Staff, at times, do not support all children with their interest in early writing and developing these skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 review the activities on offer to extend children's mathematical development  encourage staff to make better use of opportunities to support children's early writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children in the main playrooms and outside area.  The inspector spoke with the provider, staff and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector took into account the views of the parents.  The inspector checked a sample of documents, including staff suitability, safeguarding and children's files.  The inspector reviewed staff practice with the provider.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The provider and staff have a clear understanding of the procedures to follow if they have any concerns regarding children's well-being. They have robust procedures to help prevent other users of the building accessing the nursery. The provider works closely with the local authority, staff and parents to review the service she provides. Recent changes have been to change the building they use, so the children have more room to play and explore. The provider reviews staff practice to help enhance the quality of teaching. Recent training has helped to improve the support for children who speak English as an additional language to learn new words.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff work well with parents to assess children's starting points. The staff use this information effectively alongside their well-informed assessments to help plan activities to progress children's learning. Staff provide good-quality teaching, helping to enhance children's learning through the activities they offer. For example, they set up a doctor's surgery for the children's role-play. They talk with the children about illnesses and ask effective questions about the treatment they need. This helps to support children's language development as they describe what they need to do to get better. Staff work well to support children who have special educational needs and/or disabilities. They work closely with parents and other professionals caring for the children, helping them to work towards their targets.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff teach children about similarities and differences in society well. They work with parents to find out about different festivals and celebrations, and parents come in to teach these to the children. Children take an interest and ask to learn new words in the others' home languages, helping to build their understanding of different cultures. Staff make the best possible use of the outside space available, and children enjoy exploring the sand pit. They explore emptying and filling different-sized containers, helping to support their physical development.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are ready for their next stage of learning and move to school. They are confident learners and develop good communication skills. They enjoy talking about sea animals and naming the different parts of jellyfish as they make models. Children have an active voice in the setting, regularly discussing their wants and needs with the staff. This helps to support children's confidence.
