This provision is good

 The childminder has a very caring manner with the children. This helps them to make secure attachments to her and has a positive effect on their emotional well-being.  The childminder's home is safe, secure and inviting for children. The learning environment provides a wide range of imaginative opportunities for children to play and explore.  Children enjoy activities in the outdoor area and are given daily opportunities to play outside.  The childminder has developed good partnerships with parents. Information about children's care and learning is shared effectively.  The childminder uses the local area well to provide children with additional experiences that enhance their learning.  The childminder demonstrates a good knowledge of safeguarding and how to ensure that children are kept safe.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently widen children's understanding of living things and the natural world around them.  Partnerships with local nurseries and pre-schools that some children attend have not been fully developed.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance opportunities for children to develop their understanding of living things and the natural world  develop robust partnerships with other settings that children attend to help achieve the best possible learning outcomes.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the indoor play areas and the outdoor learning environment. He completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection. He spoke to the children throughout the inspection when appropriate.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records, risk assessments and safety records.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's training and qualifications and suitability of the household members and discussed her current procedure for self- evaluation.  The inspector considered the views of parents through written questionnaires.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is committed to improving the quality of her practice and uses self- evaluation well to identify and address weaknesses in her practice. She regularly attends training to improve her knowledge and this demonstrates her commitment to providing quality care to children. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has recently attended training to improve her knowledge of equality and implements this effectively into her practice. The childminder has developed strong links with parents. They comment very positively on the overall quality of the service she provides. They particularly note her professionalism and comment that their children are safe and happy, with all their needs being met.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her observations and assessments of the children's learning to plan a wide range of interesting and challenging activities. The children have recently shown an interest in shops. She has, therefore, set up an ice cream stall for the children to recreate their own experiences and role play imaginatively. The children really enjoyed this activity and sustained their interest and attention in it for a long period of time. They particularly enjoyed the role of the shopkeeper and took turns to play this. The childminder communicates well with the children, asking them appropriate questions and allowing them time to develop their own ideas. She skilfully promotes children's communication and language development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has developed very close relationships with the children in her care. She has a very caring nature and the children respond to this and look for her to be involved in their play. Children's behaviour is managed appropriately and they are encouraged to share and take turns. The childminder uses the outdoor space well to provide children with daily physical exercise. She also provides a range of healthy snacks and meals. She encourages children to take appropriate risks within their play and this helps children to learn about how to keep themselves safe.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development and are well prepared for school or the next stage in their learning. Children are able to make choices about their play and are encouraged to become increasingly independent. Children are beginning to show an interest in stories, written words and numbers. The childminder enables children to build on their prior learning and extends their understanding through skilful questioning.
