Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and assistant. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of the assistant and persons living in the household. The inspector spoke with children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and assistant access regular child protection training and know how to recognise potential indicators of abuse. They know the correct action to take if they have concerns regarding a child's welfare. The childminder carries out daily safety checks, indoors and outdoors, to help keep children safe and secure. The childminder monitors children's progress closely to identify any emerging gaps in their development. She arranges regular training to support her assistant's professional development and share ideas for good practice. She has started to develop new supervision systems to support the assistant's skills and knowledge even further.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder and assistant enthusiastically join in with children's play and learning. The childminder skilfully supports children's early mathematical skills. For example, they regularly count out various items during play and routines. Children enjoy playing games to match and recognise the value of numbers. Children love engaging in imaginary play. For instance, they brush and style hair on mannequins and pretend they are hairdressers. Children develop good problem-solving skills. For example, they concentrate carefully to find and match pieces of a jigsaw successfully. Children's communication and listening skills are encouraged well. They engage in purposeful conversations with each other and adults. Children have opportunities to learn about different cultures and the wider world around them.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder and assistant place a strong emphasis on increasing children's self- esteem. They praise children's efforts and achievements appropriately. The childminder seeks detailed information from parents about children's interests and routines to meet their needs. She has established good links with local school teachers to support children in their eventual move to school. Children develop good social skills and play collaboratively with their friends. They learn the importance of listening, sharing and taking turns. Children enjoy healthy snacks and meals and learn about the importance of good hygiene. There are regular opportunities to develop children's physical skills. For example, they regularly visit local playgroups and parks to use a wider range of play equipment, such as climbing frames.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children are making good progress in their learning. Children show good motivation to learn. They confidently choose and request activities and resources. Children demonstrate increasing independence in their self-care skills. For example, they learn to fasten their coats and tidy away toys before choosing another activity. Children gain important skills to help them prepare for the next stage of learning, including the gradual move to nursery and school.
