The childminder makes careful observations of each child. She has a good understanding of individuals' interests, needs and skills. The childminder provides a good balance of resources and plans activities that are well matched to children's interests. Young children show a keen interest in their surroundings and can easily reach toys and activities. Children develop an enjoyment of reading. The childminder gives her full attention to children and they sit closely together as they read stories and talk about the pictures. The childminder encourages their early awareness of mathematical concepts, such as number and size, effectively. The childminder teaches children to care for each other, to respect other people and to share. She makes good use of local playgroups where they meet other adults and children. Children enjoy socialising with their peers and gain confidence in different social settings. The childminder teaches children well about the risks in the setting and how to keep themselves safe, such as why they need to wear a hat in the summer months. Children develop very good independence skills, for example, following instructions to put their shoes on.

p.3

They are developing skills that prepare them well for the next stage in their learning. Children show an interest and engage in the range of activities on offer. The childminder encourages children to be imaginative. For example, together, they make pretend cups of tea. Children make independent choices as they play.
