This provision is good

 The childminder provides an attractive and inviting environment for children to play, explore and learn. She has a good range of resources that is easily accessible for children to help support their learning and development.  The childminder observes and assesses children's progress carefully and accurately. She plans and provides activities that interests the children. Children develop as active learners, making good progress from their starting points.  Children are extremely confident and at ease in the childminder's company. They are independent and are able to play together, making up games and cooperating in their play.  Children form strong emotional bonds with the childminder. They are settled, content and thoroughly enjoy their time with her.  Partnership with parents is good and the childminder keeps them well informed. For example, she shares information about children's learning and progress regularly.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not allow children enough opportunities to think for themselves, share their thoughts or respond to her questions.  The childminder does not target her professional development precisely enough to focus on raising the quality of teaching to an outstanding level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to think, respond and share their own knowledge and ideas to further support their learning  explore further professional development opportunities and raise the quality of teaching to an even higher level.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the quality of the childminder's interactions with the children.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records.  The inspector sampled the childminder's documentation and discussed her knowledge of the requirements of the early years foundation stage.  The inspector evaluated a joint activity with the childminder.  The inspector took account of parents' views from written documentation provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of her responsibilities to help keep children safe. She knows the reporting procedures to follow should she have any concerns about their welfare. She completes regular checks on her home and resources to keep children safe. The childminder uses self-evaluation well to help identify strengths and weaknesses about her practice. She regularly liaises with parents and children, and gathers and acts on their views. Effective, friendly and trusting partnerships with parents are established.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows the children well. She sustains their engagement in conversations well. She encourages children to learn and use new words and extend their vocabulary. The childminder supports children's communication skills. For example, she listens well and encourages them to talk about their lives and familiar events. The children are confident and are developing their large- and small-muscle skills and coordination. They climb and jump in the local parks and enjoy hand-coordination activities, such as painting and making marks in preparation for writing. The childminder makes careful observations of children's development in all areas of learning. This helps her to identify any areas where children need additional support.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder sets clear expectations for good behaviour and children respond well. They learn to share, take turns and respect one another's feelings. The childminder is sensitive and supports children's emotional development well. For example, they receive cuddles and reassurance when upset or frustrated. Children develop good levels of confidence and independence. For example, the childminder involves children in decision making and values their opinions. Children learn to take on responsibilities, such as tidying up after play. The childminder supports children's healthy lifestyles effectively. For example, she teaches children about how to keep safe in the sun and provides daily opportunities for physical play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn a good range of skills that helps prepare them as they move on to school. They make good progress. They are motivated to explore and take control of their own learning. For example, young children enjoy playing for an extended amount of time with a train track and accessories. They are excited and eager to explore new activities, such as filling bottles with pasta to use as shakers outdoors.
