Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The quality of teaching does not always consistently stimulate and challenge children’s learning and development.  Assessments made of the children's learning and the monitoring of progress are inconsistent. This means that the planning of activities is not always precisely focused on children’s individual learning needs.  Children are not given sufficient opportunities to independently select resources and activities for themselves. Therefore, opportunities to develop their own play and ideas are restricted.  The childminder and her assistant do not make the best use of available professional development opportunities to further develop their practice.  Self-evaluation is not always effectively used to robustly identify ongoing targets for improvement. This includes obtaining the views of parents.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder and her assistant develop appropriate relationships with parents. They welcome families into their home and are attentive to the children's care needs.  Children have opportunities to be physically active in the fresh air. They move wheeled toys and climb the steps of the slide with increasing coordination and control.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve teaching skills to ensure all children receive consistently good quality learning and development experiences to help them make good progress 31/07/2017

p.2

Due Date

 ensure accurate assessments are made of children's learning, and use this information to inform the planning of challenging activities that are sharply focussed on children's precise learning needs. 31/07/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 engage in available professional development opportunities to expand understanding of current best practice  improve self-evaluation processes to support the continuous development of the provision. This includes obtaining the views of parents  provide more opportunities for children to independently access resources and activities for themselves.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of the childminder and her husband's teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed joint observations with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's records, planning and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the views of parents.  The inspector checked evidence of the qualification of the childminder, her suitability and the suitability of her assistant.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant have a suitable knowledge of child protection procedures. They understand the signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect, and known what to do should they have a concern about the welfare of a child in their care. The childminder and her assistant maintain the required paediatric first-aid qualification. However, they have not considered further professional development opportunities. In particular, opportunities to enhance their teaching skills, including the use of their environment and resources. Systems for evaluating the quality of the provision are not rigorous enough.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder and her assistant make some observations of the children's learning as they play. However, they do not use this information effectively enough to assess children's learning needs, and plan precise next steps that extend their capabilities. Children participate in art activities and enjoy listening to stories. However, the childminder and her assistant, sometimes, ask children questions in quick succession. As a result, children do not have enough time to think and respond to the questions they are asked. Children pretend to cook food and older children enthusiastically name different fruits and vegetables. However, less confident children do not always receive the additional support and encouragement they need to participate.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder and her assistant create a welcoming, appropriately resourced environment. However, they often choose resources for the children and decide what activities they should participate in. This restricts opportunities for children to develop their own ideas and imaginations as they play. The childminder seeks appropriate information from parents about each child’s needs when they start to attend. This includes some information about what children know and can already do in their development. Children enjoy fresh fruit for their snack and are encouraged to develop good table manners. They are supported to understand simple rules and boundaries. Children have some opportunities to learn about different celebrations and cultures.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are making some progress in their learning and development in preparation for the next stage in their learning. However, children are not supported to make best progress. Nonetheless, children gain some of the basic skills they need in readiness for school. Children develop their hand-to-eye coordination skills as they learn to stack bricks on top of each other. They are encouraged to count and differentiate between different sizes. Older children use language to recall past experiences, such as trips to the seaside with their family.
