This provision is good
The childminder has developed a reflective approach since her registration. She has made changes that have a positive impact on her service, such as employing an assistant. The childminder has continued to increase her knowledge through training which helps her to support children and their parents with specific issues that arise. The childminder demonstrates good teaching skills. She plays alongside children and they enjoy her involvement. She promotes toddlers developing vocabulary as they play because she uses descriptive and clear language, repeating their words back to them. Children are safe. The childminder keeps them under close supervision and makes regular checks on children who are asleep. She reminds children to be careful as they use appropriate climbing equipment. Parents are happy with the care their children receive. They comment on the good range of activities and how their children have made progress because of the

childminder's consistent approach to issues, such as behaviour. Children enjoy choosing their own play materials. They are confident to look in boxes to find items they want and clearly indicate to the childminder when they need assistance.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder has not fully established highly focused supervision and performance management of her assistant to ensure that teaching continues to improve. Occasionally, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities to develop children's exploration of colours.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

extend the supervision and performance management for the assistant to ensure that any training needs are identified to promote highly effective teaching focus more precisely on extending children's exploration of colours and how colours can be changed.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living and working in the household. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure awareness of how to keep children safe and protect their welfare. She follows effective recruitment procedures to ensure that assistants are and remain suitable to care for children. Thorough risk assessments and ongoing reviews result in active steps being taken by the childminder to minimise hazards to children. The childminder works well with her assistant and has completed induction procedures. They decide together on the planning of activities and how they will share the daily tasks. This organisation results in a consistent approach for the children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children benefit from the childminder's good teaching skills. She has a gentle yet enthusiastic approach. She shows children how things work by playing alongside them and she talks to children about what they are doing, asking well-placed questions. For example, children show an interest in locks and keys. The childminder enables them to explore and try for themselves before offering assistance so they can be successful in using a key to open a lock on a toy. Observation and assessment is effective. The childminder knows where each child is in relation to their learning and she plans activities that children are interested in and which provide suitable challenges. For example, she supports children to be confident to take part in messy play activities by gradually introducing a good range of experiences for them, such as water, sand and paint.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children clearly show that they feel relaxed and confident in the childminder's home. They settle to sleep at rest time and wake happily. They approach the childminder for comfort and reassurance as they need it and they move freely between their chosen activities. The childminder works closely with parents to ensure that she is able to follow young children's home routines as closely as possible. This effective partnership promotes a consistent approach and supports children's feelings of well-being. Children behave well. The childminder is gentle in her approach, and uses suitable strategies, such as distraction to help children learn about the expectations for behaviour. Children have plenty of opportunities to play outside and to develop their physical skills. They are helped to wash their hands before eating. Children enjoy using cutters to make circles from a slice of watermelon as part of their healthy snacks.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are making good progress from their individual starting points because the planning of activities continues to build on what they already know. They are developing independence, they make friends, learn to work together and begin to take turns. These are skills that help to ensure that children are prepared for the next stage in their learning and for starting school when the time comes.
