This provision is good
The childminder understands how young children learn. He is creative in developing activities that ignite children's curiosity and help them to acquire new skills. There is a stimulating indoor and outdoor environment that supports all areas of development. Children are able to select resources and take decisions in their learning. The childminder is a positive role model as he joins children in their play. He speaks to children in a respectful way. He praises their achievements and encourages them to share toys and use good manners. Parents are provided with good-quality information about the childminding provision. They receive regular newsletters and reports about their children's development. Parents make very complimentary comments about the care the childminder provides. The childminder is effective in using opportunities to maintain his professional development. He completes training courses and uses the new knowledge and skills
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not fully encourage parents to share detailed information about their children's ongoing learning at home, to complement his good teaching and to enable him to plan even more precisely for the next steps in children's learning. The childminder does not make the most of every opportunity to support children's mathematical development.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector viewed a focused activity with the childminder and discussed the children's progress and achievements. The inspector spoke to children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector reviewed documents, including evidence of the suitability of the persons working and living in the household. The inspector took account of the views of parents from those spoken to on the day and from their written testimonials.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder and his co-childminder work closely together to promote children's development and protect them from harm. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows how to report a concern about a child in his care. He has completed safeguarding training and holds a first-aid qualification so he can deal with emergency situations. The childminder minimises risks within the environment and ensures that children are closely supervised. All outings are thoroughly risk assessed. Since registration, the childminder has successfully used self-evaluation to review his practice and make continued improvements.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children enjoy playing with a wide range of toys and sensory materials. They investigate sand and water and explore with curiosity and excitement. The childminder observes children as they play and completes accurate assessments of their learning. He uses this information to help him identify what children need to learn next. Children develop good concentration and attention skills as they listen to stories. The childminder uses different voices and tones to help keep children involved and engaged. Children enthusiastically talk about the characters and predict what is going to happen on the next page. The childminder names colours, shapes and objects to help broaden children's vocabularies.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children's emotional well-being is effectively supported. They are very happy and confident in the childminder's care. Children demonstrate a closeness and pleasure when joining him in activities. The childminder effectively helps children to do things for themselves and to understand the importance of making healthy choices. Children prepare and serve their own fruit and pour drinks at snack time. They also learn to put on their own shoes before going outside to play. They have plenty of fresh air and play energetically in the garden. They also regularly go on outings to local parks and community groups. These experiences help to increase children's social skills and confidence. Children learn about each other's similarities and differences. They use a variety of resources that reflect diversity and acknowledge traditional cultural events.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points. They are curious, determined and motivated to learn new things. They concentrate as they complete puzzles and look at books for pleasure. Children point out words and items of interest on the pictures on display. They speak and listen well, and learn how to share and cooperate well with others. Children are developing the skills and knowledge they need to support their ongoing education, including starting school.
