p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder provides a safe environment where children settle quickly and build warm and trusting relationships.  Children are keen to take part in a broad range of activities, which the childminder plans according to their interests and learning priorities.  Effective partnerships with parents ensure that they work well together to meet children's care and learning needs effectively.  Children develop good mathematical knowledge. They confidently count, match numbers and compare sizes.  The childminder carries out research and attends regular training, for example, to keep up to date with current guidance and legislation.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, the childminder misses opportunities to encourage children to be independent and manage tasks for themselves.  The childminder's use of evaluation is not fully effective. She evaluates her provision but she does not routinely take into account the views of parents and children, to help identify areas to improve even further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to manage tasks for themselves to develop their independence  continue to further develop the self-evaluation process and increase opportunities for parents and children to regularly contribute their views, to help improve and develop the setting further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children in the various play areas, including in the garden.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector viewed a selection of documents, including policies and children's development records.  The inspector spoke to parents and used written feedback to gain their views about the provision.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder organises her home effectively to meet children's needs. She is motivated and passionate about her role. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is confident about the indicators that may give her cause to be concerned about a child's welfare. She is clear about the procedures she should follow if she has any child protection concerns. The childminder implements a good range of policies and procedures to support her in ensuring the provision provides children with a safe and secure environment. She carries out risk assessments and these cover all aspects of her home and outings. The childminder works with other childminders and regularly shares ideas with them.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder regularly observes and assesses children, and she provides activities that support them in reaching the next steps in their learning. Children enjoy naming and exploring colours as they paint with clothes pegs and cotton wool. The childminder encourages them to identify the different colours that they create when paints are mixed, to extend their learning. Children's communication and language skills are supported well, for instance, the childminder introduces new vocabulary, such as 'soggy' and 'squidgy'. Children experience opportunities in the community. For example, the childminder regularly takes them to a local childminders' group where they play and learn alongside their peers and develop new relationships.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well and enjoy being with their friends and the childminder. The childminder carefully supports children's understanding about sharing and taking turns. The childminder is a good role model for children. She teaches them about healthy lifestyles, such as washing their hands before meals and after being in the garden. Children have lots of opportunities for outdoor play. The childminder encourages healthy eating with nutritious snacks and meals. Children learn to value similarities and differences between themselves and others.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children achieve well and make good progress from their individual starting points. Children's early reading and writing are developing well. For example, they enjoy reading their favourite story to the childminder and have a good understanding of the key characters and plot. Children develop early writing skills, such as mark marking with a range of materials. This prepares them well for when they start school.
