This provision is good
Staff provide children with clear guidance and explanations to help them manage their behaviour. For example, they remind them about the pre-school rules, such as good listening and gentle hands. This helps them learn about appropriate actions. Children are happy, confident and enjoy their time at the pre-school. They make good progress and are ready for their move to school. The manager monitors her staff well. For instance, she observes their practice, identifies relevant training and provides regular meetings. This helps staff develop their knowledge and skills further. Staff provide regular opportunities to involve parents in their children's learning. For example, they provide parent meetings, texts, emails, stay-and-play sessions, book sharing schemes and online blogs. This helps parents to continue their children's learning at home. The manager and staff support children's specific needs well. For example, they closely

monitor their medical conditions throughout the session. This supports their physical health effectively.

It is not yet outstanding because:
Staff do not consistently offer children opportunities to develop their independence further. Staff do not make the most of opportunities to help children learn about the diversity of each other's background.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching and the impact this has on children's learning and development. The inspector conducted a joint observation with the manager. The inspector viewed a range of documentation including suitability checks and children's records. The inspector spoke to parents and children. The inspector held discussions with staff in relation to observations of children's play, learning and progress.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. Staff have a secure understanding of the signs that would cause them alarm about a child's welfare and the processes to follow. They know what to do if they have concerns about leaders or other staff. The manager and staff monitor children's progress well. This helps them identify any gaps in development early and provide the appropriate support. The manager and staff successfully work with a range of other professionals, which helps to meet children's individual learning needs. The manager self- evaluates the pre-school effectively. She identifies areas of weakness and sets targets for improvement. This helps to develop the quality of the provision and provide better outcomes for children. The manager uses additional funding well to help support children's individual needs and development.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Staff use their good-quality teaching to support children's learning and development effectively. They successfully build children's mathematical skills. For instance, counting, comparing sizes and using simple addition during activities. Staff encourage children's literacy skills well. For example, they sound out the initial sounds to words and read books. Staff successfully develop children's communication and language skills. For instance, they introduce new words, such as 'anemone', to help develop children's vocabulary further. Staff ask a wide range of questions to help children think for themselves and extend their learning. They help them explore and investigate natural materials and textures, such as making play dough.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Staff help children form a positive sense of themselves and their place in the world. For example, they encourage them to show photographs to their friends about where they have been with the pre-school's soft toy. Staff help children learn about healthy lifestyles. For example, they provide daily opportunities for them to be physically active outside and offer healthy snacks. This supports their physical well-being. Staff help children learn to show care and develop their interest in living things. For example, children feed frogs and look for insects with magnifying glasses in the garden.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make progress that is appropriate for their age and are ready for their next stage in development. They successfully build their physical skills, for example, they thread cereal and pasta on string. Children form good relationships with their friends. For instance, they ask to do things together during group time and engage in role play, developing their ideas and talking about their experiences.
