This provision is good

 The qualified childminder has a secure knowledge of how to support children to learn and achieve. She plans good activities to cover a range of learning and development opportunities.  Children play well together and learn to share. For example, they patiently wait for their turn during games and the childminder gives them good support to enable all children to answer questions.  The childminder works well with parents and keeps them up to date with children's progress. She maintains good communication with them, such as through daily discussions and messages.  Children make good progress and learn new skills to support their development. The childminder knows their interests well to help them engage in play. For instance, they enjoy exploring role play and are involved in setting up different scenarios.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not built highly effective relationships with other settings that children attend to best support continuity in their learning.  The childminder does not consistently review more detailed aspects of children's progress to have a deeper understanding of all of their skills and abilities in certain areas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 build further on existing relationships with other settings that children attend to better support continuity in children's learning  develop the way children's progress is reviewed to maximise the understanding of children's overall skills, to help them make even better progress.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder evaluates her practice well and identifies areas for improvement. She is committed to further developing her skills. For example, she networks with other childminders and completes training. She has recently developed how she observes children's individual learning styles and plans suitable activities to help them explore these areas further. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder understands the areas that may impact on children's safety and welfare. She knows what to do if she has concerns about children in her care. Parents positively comment that their children enjoy their time with the childminder and are always engaged in learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder supports children's communication and language development effectively. For example, she extends their language well and uses good opportunities to talk to children about the different and exotic fruit in their story. Children's mathematical skills are developing well. For instance, they count the 'food' in their shopping basket and the childminder brings their attention to the size and shape of the items. The childminder supports children who speak English as an additional language well. For example, they talk about the meaning of different words in their home language and English. The childminder extends this well and includes discussions about other languages to help children learn about other people around the world.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps children to settle well and they are comfortable in her care. Children enjoy exploring nature. For example, they search for bugs and have good discussions about what they have found. The childminder helps children to build their confidence. For instance, she praises them for their achievements and skilfully supports them to try new things. Children are confident to share their opinions. For example, the childminder encourages them to share their thoughts on the new fruit they try for a snack and children make their views clear. The childminder effectively supports children's physical development. For instance, they have the opportunity to go on walks, to the park and play in the garden.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are motivated and eager to take part in play, and are absorbed in purposeful activities. Children have an understanding of writing and begin to mark make during play. They enjoy making choices, such as with what and where to play. Children independently manage their own care needs relative to their age. They learn a good range of skills to help them be ready to start school.
