This provision is good

 The childminder's calm and gentle nature makes children feel welcome and safe in her home. They settle quickly and are content, happy and ready to learn.  The childminder works very effectively in partnership with parents, to help ensure their children's individual needs are met. She actively involves parents in their children's learning and provides each child with a colourful and informative learning journey book.  The childminder is a positive role model for children. She helps them learn to manage their behaviour and share resources.  Children's physical and communication skills are supported very well. They develop a growing confidence in their own abilities and enjoy what they achieve.  The childminder reflects on and evaluates her practice effectively. She focuses on identifying and addressing areas of provision to help improve children's experiences. For example, she has introduced additional water-play equipment in her outdoor area.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children are not supported as well as possible to make independent choices in their play.  The childminder does not make full use of all opportunities to help build on children's imaginative and creative skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to direct and lead their own learning  extend opportunities for children to use their imagination and develop their creative skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of the teaching and interaction during activities and assessed the impact of this on children's learning.  The inspector sampled relevant documentation, such as children's records and policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of written comments from parents and spoke with the children.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her self-evaluation process.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has recently attended child protection training. She understands the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child in her care. She also has a good understanding of how to prevent children from being exposed to extreme views. The childminder ensures that her paediatric first-aid training is up to date. This helps her to deal with any minor accidents or injuries that children may sustain. The childminder shares information effectively with parents. They give feedback that they are very pleased and happy with their children's progress and care. The childminder works in partnership with other professionals involved in children's lives, sharing information with them regularly to help provide a consistent approach to children's care and learning. She exchanges good practice ideas with other providers, helping her to continue to improve her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Overall, children benefit from a good range of toys and resources that is suitable for their ages and stages of development. The childminder ensures that she identifies children's individual skills and interests. This helps her to provide appropriate activities that suitably challenge children. The childminder makes accurate observations and assessments of children's achievements. She identifies their next steps in learning so that she can build on what they already know. Children enjoy making marks on paper using paints and crayons. They love to play outdoors and explore water, learning about volume and capacity as they pour it into containers. Children begin to recognise colours, shapes, numbers and letters in their play. The childminder extends their vocabulary, introducing new words into the conversations they have together.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children build close relationships with the childminder and are clearly happy, safe and relaxed. The childminder ensures that children have opportunities to learn about their local community. They explore local parks, attend stay-and-play groups and go further afield, for example, to visit beaches. These experiences help children develop their social skills in different situations and to become aware of the needs of others. The childminder provides children with healthy food options and they spend a lot of time outdoors in the fresh air. This helps to support their physical well-being and development.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in their learning in relation to their starting points. They are confident speakers and interact very well with their peers and adults. Children are keen to participate in a variety of activities and explore the environment. Children are prepared well for the next stage in their learning, including starting school.
