This provision is inadequate

 Since her last inspection, the childminder has not developed her skills and knowledge to offer quality learning experiences. She does not accurately reflect on the quality of her provision. Therefore, her capacity to improve outcomes for children is weak.  The childminder does not keep a consistent daily record of the names of the children being cared for on the premises and the hours of their attendance.  The childminder does not effectively observe and assess children's progress. Teaching is not tailored to match children's individual learning needs. Children are not well engaged and motivated to learn.  The childminder does not always ensure that procedures to minimise risks to children are implemented thoroughly enough to support their safety.  The childminder does not find out as much information as possible from parents about their children's learning in order to fully support her early identification and planning of

This provision is inadequate

children's precise learning needs from the very start.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Parents speak positively about the care provided and complement the homely environment.  The childminder encourages children to make healthy food choices and wash their hands before mealtimes. Children begin to develop an understanding of what contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 keep a daily record of the names of each child being cared for on the premises and the hours that they attend 26/06/2017

p.2

Due Date

 improve the quality of teaching to ensure each area of learning and development is promoted through a good balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities, and make sure children are consistently well engaged and challenged so that they make at least good progress 26/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

 ensure assessments of children's learning and development are consistent and precise from the outset to obtain an accurate understanding of each child's level of achievement, interests and learning styles, and use the information to shape learning experiences that are tailored to meet the individual needs of each child 26/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that procedures to minimise risks to children are implemented thoroughly enough to ensure children's safety 26/07/2017

p.2

Due Date

 undertake professional development opportunities that improve knowledge and skills to drive forward the overall quality of the provision. 26/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 seek more detailed information from parents about what children know and can do, in order to plan even more precisely for their continued progress from an early stage  improve self-evaluation processes and make sure that any weaknesses in the provision are quickly identified and swiftly addressed.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.3

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate

Safeguarding is not effective. Although fire exits are kept clear and the childminder identifies potential risks in the environment, she does not ensure these risks are consistently minimised. For example, poor routines around mealtimes lead to children running around while still eating. The childminder is aware of the procedures to follow should she have a concern about the welfare of a child. She maintains a current paediatric first-aid certificate. The childminder has established partnerships with other providers to offer continuity of care. She gathers information from parents when children first start in order to meet children's individual care needs. Most documentation is maintained as required. However, the childminder does not consistently record children's attendance accurately. She does not reflect on her teaching practice to help raise outcomes for children. The childinder has not made effective use of self-evaluation to identify and

address weaknesses raised at the last inspection.

p.4

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is inadequate

The childminder has not gathered sufficient information from parents about children who are new to the setting. She does not have a precise knowledge of what children know and can do on entry to help inform her initial assessments. Observations of children's achievements are not regular enough. This means the childminder does not have sufficient information to accurately identify children's next steps in learning and plan for their good progress. As a result, children lose interest and become bored during the course of the day, which leads to poor behaviour. The childminder uses some teaching techniques to promote children's communication skills. For example, she provides a commentary as she talks with children and introduces new words for them to hear and copy.

p.4

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

Weaknesses in leadership and management mean that children's safety is not assured. The childminder has suitable procedures in place to help children settle in. Children are generally happy and comfortable in the setting. The youngest children have formed secure attachments with the childminder. For example, they seek her attention when they show signs of being tired and enjoy individual story time. Children have daily opportunities to develop their physical skills. They play outside in the childminder's garden and walk to and from school.

p.4

Outcomes for children are inadequate

Children make insufficient progress in their learning and development. Teaching does not consistently provide challenge for children and activities quickly lack purpose. The weaknesses in assessments of children's progress mean that any gaps in learning show little signs of closing. As a result, some children are not prepared for the next stages of their learning. However, they are willing to join in with new experiences and show enjoyment of some aspects of their learning.
