This provision is good
The childminder is an experienced practitioner. She uses her knowledge and expertise of child development well, overall, to help children to make good progress in their learning. The childminder plans stimulating, interesting activities for children. These help them to develop as confident, motivated learners who enjoy learning together and from each other. The childminder makes good use of professional development opportunities, in order to develop her knowledge of child development further. Children demonstrate excellent independence skills for their age. They instigate activities, such as setting the table, when they know it is snack or mealtime. The childminder supports children to develop positive relationships with her and other minded children. They demonstrate friendly behaviour towards each other and take steps to resolve their own minor conflicts should they occur.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not always provide sufficient opportunities for older children to hear the sounds in the words, in order to support their early reading skills to the highest possible level. The monitoring of children's progress is not yet rigorous enough to provide the childminder with precise information to ensure any possible gaps in learning are identified even more swiftly.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a comprehensive understanding of child protection procedures. She knows how to act and who to contact should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder's home and garden area are safe for children to access. Effective policies and risk assessment procedures underpin her good practice. Partnerships with others settings children attend are strong. Good information is shared between the childminder and practitioners that help to provide continuity in children's care and learning. Arrangements for evaluating the quality of provision are in place. The childminder reviews many areas of her practice, identifying many ways in which she can improve.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder demonstrates particularly strong skills in helping children to extend their mathematical skills and knowledge. She expertly incorporates concepts, such as counting and simple calculations into everyday activities. For example, during snack time, the childminder helps older children to understand that three pieces of banana in each bowl make a total of six altogether. The childminder encourages younger children to count the number of train carriages on a track. When children count up to three, she provides additional challenge, encouraging them to count up to five. Parents are kept well informed of the progress their children make. A range of opportunities is provided to keep parents updated and to share what they know about their children's ongoing learning at home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder provides high standards of care for children, supporting their physical needs very well. Good hygiene practices are observed during the day and children develop an understanding of routine activities, such as washing their hands before eating meals. The childminder talks to children about the importance of a healthy diet. She provides a wide range of fresh, nutritious food, encouraging children to try new foods to extend their tastes and preferences. The childminder understands the importance of supporting children's emotional needs when they prepare to start school. She talks to children about their new experiences and accompanies them in activities, such as visiting their new classrooms.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in their learning and develop a wide range of skills, supporting them well in preparation for school. They concentrate during activities and show they are proud of their achievements when they complete tasks. Children begin to use mathematical names for shapes. Older children accurately name shapes, such as rectangles, ovals and squares. Younger children quickly recognise star shapes and triangles.
