This provision is good

 Children show that they feel confident and secure in the childminder's care. The childminder has a kind and caring approach, and she develops positive relationships with children, their parents and carers.  The childminder provides an inviting learning environment, indoors and outdoors, that encourages children to be inquisitive and curious learners.  The childminder knows children well. She follows their interests carefully and builds on their previous learning effectively to help them make good progress.  The childminder evaluates her practice routinely. She accurately identifies areas for development that improve outcomes for children.  The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding procedures to help keep children safe.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, the childminder does not make the best use of opportunities to encourage babies to develop their own words and sounds.  At times, the childminder overlooks opportunities to introduce babies to number names to support their early mathematical development fully.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for babies to imitate words and sounds to support their communication and language development further  introduce opportunities for babies to develop an awareness of number names to encourage their early mathematical development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities indoors and outdoors.  The inspector and the childminder observed and discussed activities together.  The inspector talked to the childminder, parents and children at appropriate points throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records, the childminder's self-evaluation form, written comments from parents and evidence of the childminder's training.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder responds well to feedback from parents and children to help her monitor and improve her practice. For example, following requests from parents, she has improved the quality of food and drinks to encourage healthy eating more effectively. Parents comment positively on the care and learning experiences that the childminder provides, and they state that their children enjoy attending her setting. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and first-aid procedures up to date. She responds quickly and effectively to any concerns or incidents that may have an impact on children’s well-being. The childminder completes comprehensive risk assessments and appropriate accident records to support robust safety procedures.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder assesses children’s progress effectively and uses this information well to plan challenging and engaging learning experiences. She works closely with parents to guide learning at home and to find out about children’s current interests. The childminder teaches children new skills successfully. For example, she helps young children learn how to use tools and objects for their intended purpose as they enjoy washing wheeled toys in the garden. The childminder encourages partnership working with other settings that children attend to share information and encourage consistency in children’s care and learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a good role model for children. She supports children patiently to manage their feelings and behaviour. She supervises young children closely, and she gently reminds them about safety procedures to reduce the risk of accidents. The childminder provides good opportunities for children to enjoy fresh air and exercise, and she provides a healthy and balanced diet. She supports children to develop positive attitudes to people who are different from themselves. For example, she teaches children about similarities and differences, such as exploring a variety of cultural festivals.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in preparation for their next stages in learning and for their future school lives. They show good levels of motivation and interest in the play environment, and they develop a positive approach to learning. Children form secure attachments with the childminder and develop positive relationships with other children. Older children communicate well as they express their ideas and thoughts with confidence. They show a deep fascination in the world around them as they enjoy observing and handling insects that they find in the garden.
