This provision is good
Since registration, the childminder has made positive changes to her service. She has continued to increase and update her knowledge through training. She has changed the way she plans activities for children which helps her to effectively evaluate the learning for each child. Children are safe in the childminder's home. She keeps them under close supervision and makes regular checks on children who are asleep. Parents are happy with the childminder. They make positive and complimentary comments about how happy their children are to attend. They say how well they are kept informed about their child's care routines and the activities they have enjoyed. Children show a clear attachment and secure sense of well-being in the childminder's home. Babies smile and giggle when she speaks to them; they readily settle to sleep at rest time and wake happily. Teaching is good. The childminder provides positive and enthusiastic involvement in

children's play; she talks to them, plays alongside them and gives plenty of praise.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Children have fewer opportunities to explore and be curious about items of different texture in the natural world. The childminder does not make the most of opportunities that arise during activities to promote children's developing early literacy.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

extend the opportunities for children to be curious about the natural world focus more precisely on supporting children's developing awareness of literacy during activities.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household. The inspector spoke to the children during the inspection. The inspector spoke with one parent on the day of inspection and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of the procedures to follow in the event of child protection concerns and she has completed updated training. Thorough risk assessments ensure that any safety issues are identified and steps are taken to minimise the risk. For example, she has a safety gate across the foot of the stairs. The childminder has a reflective approach to her work. She recognises the positive impact on her confidence and teaching of the extra knowledge gained from training and the changes she has made to her practice. She is keen to continue to develop her service and identifies well-targeted plans for the future.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Children benefit from the childminder's gentle and positive involvement in their play. She gets to know them well and skilfully plans activities that continually build on what children know. The effective planning results in children being provided with suitable challenges that help them continue to make good progress. Children are excited to take part in activities and freely choose from the good range of toys. They eagerly look inside a cloth bag and choose a toy animal. Babies pull the toy out and look intently at it, then to the childminder as she names the animal and some of its features. Children enjoy exploring the environment; they move around confidently and enjoy looking at books.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are able to settle-in when they start attending because the childminder works closely with their parents to find out detailed information about their child's care routines and their progress at home. She follows babies' home routines as closely as possible. Children behave very well. The childminder uses effective and consistent ways to gently remind them why certain behaviour is not acceptable and children respond positively to this. Children develop friendships; they look for each other and show care and concern for their friends when they get upset. Mealtimes are pleasant, social occasions where children sit together. They eagerly eat the food that is provided by their parents. Babies are encouraged to feed themselves with their fingers and to hold their own drinking cups.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their individual starting points. They are able to experience a wide range of activities. This helps them to gain skills that mean they are well prepared for the next stage in their learning and for the eventual move on to school. Children choose their own toys from a good selection. They move around independently and develop relationships with other children and the childminder.
