This provision is good

 The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She regularly observes and assesses children's learning and development, and enthusiastically engages them in purposeful play. All children make good progress.  The childminder supports children effectively to gain good communication and language skills.  Children behave well according to expectations for their age. The childminder is a positive role model to children and provides them with clear and consistent boundaries. She teaches children to treat people with care and respect.  The childminder has established effective partnerships with parents to support children's individual needs and promote their development from the very beginning.  The childminder is constantly reflecting on all aspects of her service. She successfully uses the views of parents, children and local authorities to improve her service.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to help children practise their writing skills.  Sometimes, the childminder does not explain to children the benefits of healthy food as part of a healthy lifestyle.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to practise their early writing skills  help children to understand why healthy food is good for them as part of living a healthy lifestyle.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the childminder's interaction with children throughout the inspection, indoors and outdoors.  The inspector sampled children's observation, planning and assessment documents, and looked at their registration records.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's suitability to work with children and sampled some policies and procedures.  The inspector held conversations with the childminder and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is fully aware of her responsibility to protect children, and knows what procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child's safety or welfare. The childminder regularly updates her knowledge to improve her teaching skills and to gain new ideas to support children's learning effectively. The childminder closely monitors children's progress and shares relevant information with parents on a regular basis to help maintain consistency for children's care and development. She quickly identifies any gaps in children's learning and ensures she helps these to close rapidly.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides children with a range of enjoyable, interesting, and age- appropriate learning experiences, inside and outside. She skilfully uses children's interests to plan stimulating activities and teach children though play. For example, when children show an interest in role play, the childminder follows their ideas and pretends to be a client in a garage or explains what they have to do in the doctor's surgery. The childminder skilfully extends children's vocabulary. She provides good support for children learning English as an additional language. For example, she names objects children use in English, repeats the words in Spanish and asks children to repeat clearly. She uses good questioning, which also helps children to think for themselves.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a very caring and nurturing environment. She makes effective use of information gathered from parents to help children settle and adjust to her care. All children are happy and settled. Children show a good level of independence. For example, children pour paint from tubs to use during activities, and older children help clean the table after mealtimes. Children follow good hygiene routines and have opportunities to play outdoors daily. Children play confidently on their own and cooperate in small groups. The childminder knows when to step back and let children play at their own pace, which helps them gain social skills and experience. The childminder consistently praises children to boost their confidence and self-esteem.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including those who speak English as an additional language, make good progress from their starting points. They successfully develop skills for their next steps and future life. Children learn mathematics through real-life experience. For example, they pretend to pay money for services in their role-play garage. Children develop very well socially, physically and emotionally. They are confident and express their needs clearly.
