This provision is good

 The childminder uses what she knows about children through her observation and assessment to successfully challenge them and ensure that they make good progress.  Children are happy, settled and progress well. They have formed strong bonds with the childminder and this helps to support their emotional well-being.  The childminder is a positive role model for children. She is kind, calm and nurturing. Children behave well and use good manners.  Partnerships with parents and other settings children attend are good. The childminder works well with parents and other professionals to share information about children's care and development.  The childminder seeks feedback from parents, children and other early years professionals about her provision. She uses this information well to develop her practice, so that children achieve good outcomes.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder reads stories very quickly and misses opportunities to further develop children's language development.  Some mathematics activities offered do not support children's early number recognition as well as they could.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop story times to further support children's language  review mathematical activities offered to support children's number recognition more.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children.  The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled paperwork, including policies, qualification certificates and children's records.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through their written letters left for the inspection.  The inspector discussed self-evaluation with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands the role she plays in child protection. She knows whom to contact should she have any concerns about children's welfare and safety. She maintains suitable policies and procedures that she shares with parents to further keep children safe. The childminder continues to attend training that helps her to monitor and sustain her professional skills and knowledge. She regularly shares ideas with other local childminders to strengthen her provision, such as giving children more time to respond to questions she asks instead of speaking for them.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder monitors children well and provides activities that successfully support them in reaching the next steps in their learning. She encourages children in leading their own play. For example, young children concentrate well as they solve how to use push- button toys. The childminder supports them skilfully by telling them the coloured shapes that pop up. Older children identify different colours as they paint and draw, and they recognise some letters from their name. All children enjoy playing together as they explore natural resources, seeing how different items look and feel. The childminder starts to introduce new language well as she explains how some items feel, for example, 'rough' or 'smooth'.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder takes children out regularly to play centres and into the local community, to promote their physical and social development and to broaden their understanding of the diversity of the world around them. Children who are beginning to walk benefit from using walkers to explore their surroundings and increase their coordination and physical skills. Children show good consideration for each other's feelings and know to share and take turns. Children are confident to ask the childminder for a story and a rest when they are tired. The childminder promotes children's confidence and self-motivation well. For example, she offers lots of praise and encouragement.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children gain good skills that enable them to become capable and confident learners, and that prepare them for the next stage in their learning and eventual move on to school. Young children seek and maintain eye contact as they make sounds and babble as they play musical instruments. They are refining their self-care skills as they feed themselves and begin to understand daily routines. Older children practise writing with a range of materials to develop their early literacy skills. Children develop good levels of concentration and learn to solve problems well. For example, they persevere when completing puzzles.
