This provision is good

 The childminder provides a rich, stimulating, child-centred environment both inside and outside; overall she plans exciting activities that motivate children to learn.  The childminder and her assistants work closely as a team. They all know the children very well and form secure emotional attachments.  The childminder forms strong partnerships with parents and has flexible settling in procedures. These are tailored to individual needs and start with a home visit before care commences. Parents state that they are very pleased with the care and education their children receive and highly recommend.  Children make good progress in their learning. There are effective strategies in place to monitor ongoing development and plan appropriate next steps in learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 There is not a sharp enough focus on supporting children, whose home language is not English, to make rapid progress in the communication and language skills  In good weather, when the garden is in use as a play area, visual monitoring by adults of the external gate does not ensure unauthorised persons could not enter the premises.  The childminder and her assistants do not have a range of highly effective strategies to help children to learn to develop self control and manage their own feelings and behaviour.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve knowledge and understanding of the variety of behaviour management strategies available to positively to support children of differing ages and stages of development to learn to manage their own behaviour  review and improve arrangements for arrival and collection of children to ensure for better security of the premises  improve knowledge and understanding of how to provide a sharper focus on helping those children, whose home language is not English, to acquire communication and language skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the indoor and outdoor learning environment where children play and viewed all areas of the home used for childminding.  The inspector observed a focused activity and evaluated the quality of teaching with the childminder.  The inspector spoke with the childminder, two of her assistants and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's records, planning and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.  The inspector checked evidence of the qualifications of the childminder, her suitability and the suitability of her assistants and other household members.  The inspector took account the views of parents spoken to on the day.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. Following a safeguarding incident, the childminder reflected on her practice, improved her knowledge and procedures and shared these with parents and her assistants. All adults are aware of the possible signs of abuse and know the procedures to follow if they have a concern. They have completed first aid and safeguarding training so they can deal with an emergency situation. Informal supervision meetings are effective. The childminder evaluates her practice well and regularly seeks suitable training courses to extend her, and her assistants', knowledge and skills. Risk assessments are carried out and hazards to children are minimised. Children learn to keep themselves safe and are well supervised; they can not leave the premises. The childminder and her assistants visually monitor parents and carers arriving at the garden gate. However, in good weather when the garden is in use as a play area, this procedure

alone would not ensure unauthorised persons could not enter the premises.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Activities, based on children's interests and capabilities, are well planned. The childminder and assistants effectively observe children's learning and achievements. The childminder tracks children's development to ensure any gaps in learning are swiftly addressed and acted upon, in partnership with parents and other agencies. All adults use good teaching skills to support children in their learning. They effectively engage with the children, capturing their interest and promoting learning by asking questions to help them think. They listen carefully and sensitively repeat words, which children mispronounce, correctly. Adult use sign language to further support children's communication but have fewer methods to encourage rapid language development with children who are learning to speak English as an additional language.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder retains key person responsibility but all assistants engage effectively with the children and parents. They follow children's routines. Children behave well and the childminder and assistants set clear and consistent boundaries. They have recently stopped using 'time out' as a method of behaviour management, but do not yet have a broad range of alternative strategies to help children to learn to manage their own behaviour. Children develop close bonds with all of the adults and they are good role models. Children enjoy social mealtimes around the table. The learn which food is healthy for them and to eat their savoury food before having treats.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop good levels of independence, such as tidying up after play and feeding themselves from a young age. They appreciate books, listen attentively during group time and join in enthusiastically with familiar songs. Older children practise saying letters and the sounds they represent when playing board games and several are beginning to write with purpose. Children learn to count objects, recognise numbers and identify colours, including gold and silver. They make good progress from their different starting points and are gaining the necessary skills in preparation for school.
