Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has an in-depth understanding of child protection issues and the procedures to follow if she has concerns regarding a child's welfare. The childminder is keen to support children to know how to maintain their own safety by learning how to challenge themselves while assessing the risks. The childminder works well with parents. She regularly keeps them informed of their child's achievements in their learning and development, as well as what they are starting to learn. She sends home regular reports. They work together to offer consistency in teaching skills which help to support children to make good progress. Parents are very complimentary about the care and teaching their children receive. The childminder has a good understanding of how to access support from other professionals if it is required.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder understands how young children learn through play. Overall, she plans activities which challenge and support their learning. Children develop their small-muscle skills in preparation for their early writing. For example, they enjoy manipulating play dough and using a variety of different tools. They enjoy looking at photographs and recalling activities they have previously done to make their own special book. She supports older children with understanding letter sounds and helps them develop pencil control, such as giving them a purpose for writing. Through their play they learn about colours, counting and comparing sizes, which helps to support their mathematical awareness. Overall, the childminder promotes children's communication and language skills well. She repeats what younger children have said to her, to help encourage them to hear the correct pronunciation of words and how to use the words in a sentence.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder supports children to socialise with other children. They attend regular playgroups and visit places in the local environment, such as the library and a regular rhyme time session. Children are supported to develop important social skills, such as sharing with others. The childminder helps to promote children's emerging independence skills. For example, they help to set the table at snack time. Children are learning about healthy lifestyles. They have regular access to physical exercise in the garden or on outings in the local environment, such as walks by the river and visits to the park.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in their learning and development. They develop good problem-solving skills and work together as a team. They are obtaining key skills, positive attitudes to learning and the characteristics they need for the next steps in their development and are well prepared for school.
