This provision is good
Children are happy and secure. The childminder is kind, caring and nurturing, and builds strong relationships with them. Children are confident learners and develop a good range of skills and positive attitudes that supports their ongoing development. The childminder provides clear explanations to contribute towards children's understanding of how to keep themselves safe. For example, she reinforces children's knowledge of road safety and how to manage stairs. The childminder successfully promotes children's communication and language skills. She talks to children and explains what she is doing. She encourages their responses and models correct and clear speech.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder has not considered how she can extend opportunities for children to engage in sensory exploration, in order to further develop their learning experiences. The childminder has not established firm partnerships with all other settings that share children's education. The current arrangements for professional development do not fully provide opportunities for the childminder to consider how to raise teaching to the highest level.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this had on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of the childminder. The inspector spoke to children during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of her role in protecting children in her setting and in the wider community. Her home is safe, she minimises dangers and supervises children well at all times. The childminder monitors children's progress to help her identify if there are any gaps in their learning. She works well with parents to keep them informed of their children's development and progress. She also encourages them to give feedback about the provision and considers children's views to help her reflect on her practice and improve. Additionally, she consults with childminding colleagues as part of her evaluation process, to help her continually improve.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn. She completes regular observations so she can plan for their next steps in learning. Overall, she plans a good variety of activities and outings to promote children's learning. Good use is made of community groups and facilities to extend learning opportunities. The childminder recognises children's love of books and ensures these are readily available. She gives her full attention to children and they sit closely together as they read stories and talk about the pictures. As well as promoting children's learning, the childminder uses such opportunities to encourage children's emotional well-being, confidence and self-esteem.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder provides a welcoming environment. She is sensitive to children's individual needs and well-being. She seeks detailed information from parents when children first start so that she has a good understanding of their daily routines. Settling-in sessions are tailored to children's needs. The childminder manages children's behaviour well and in ways that are appropriate for their different stages of development. Daily opportunities are provided for children to be physically active. Children get lots of exercise and fresh air as they play in local parks and, as they get older, walk to and from school. Good standards of cleanliness are maintained to reduce the risk of cross-infection.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in their learning and development. They are effectively acquiring the necessary skills in preparation for their next stages in learning, including nursery and school. They are confident to make choices and initiate their own play. For example, they decide what they want to play with from the wide range of readily available resources. They learn how to behave in larger groups and develop an understanding of sharing and taking turns.
