wishes known, even when they are only just starting to speak. They are confident and happy, and make choices about their play. Their needs for rest and refreshment are promptly addressed.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not gather enough details from parents about what their children can do at home, to support the precise planning of the next steps in their learning right from the beginning of the placement.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 gather more detailed information from parents about what children can do at home, to fully inform the assessments of children's abilities and the precise planning of next steps in their learning from the first weeks of their attendance.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a discussion about an activity with the childminder.  The inspector had discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self-evaluation and a selection of policies and children's records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her crucial role in protecting children from harm. She has developed her knowledge further by undertaking courses. She shares information with parents so they are better equipped to protect children they know. She reviews how she manages risks to take account of the ages and abilities of the children she cares for. She takes parents' views into consideration when she makes improvements to other aspects of her work.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder identifies areas where she needs to support children's learning further. Younger children's activities provide opportunities for them to develop their physical and social skills. The childminder understands that everyday play can be adapted to expand children's understanding and skills. She helps children to move by showing them how to crawl and encouraging them to move towards interesting objects. The childminder supports children's language development well. She interprets older babies' needs effectively by communicating through gestures and some first sounds. She talks to children and explains what is happening, building on their understanding and giving opportunities for them to hear and practise new words.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are inquisitive and bright. The childminder has built very warm relationships with them. She praises their achievements and encourages their confidence to try to develop new skills. Children's behaviour is good. They understand what is expected of them and respond to the positive atmosphere and clear boundaries. The childminder ensures children develop an understanding of healthy lifestyles. They also develop an understanding of the importance of a balanced diet as they are encouraged to try fruits and vegetables which they have helped to grow. The childminder has good relationships with parents and works with them to ensure children's emotional and physical needs are well supported.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children settle into their new environment with confidence. They are enthusiastic learners, who are very keen to join in with activities. They learn the key skills they need for the move on to primary education. Children are making expected progress in all areas of learning and are working comfortably within the range of development typical for their age. Children watch carefully as new toys are introduced and enthusiastically imitate and experiment to see what they can do. They practise new physical skills as they manipulate objects and make attempts to crawl.
