This provision is good

 The childminder competently observes and assesses children's progress. She focuses well on identifying and narrowing any emerging gaps in children's learning. All children make good progress in relation to their starting points.  Since the previous inspection, the childminder has significantly improved the outdoor area. Children are benefiting from a wider range of stimulating resources and activities that extends their learning further when playing outdoors.  The childminder is kind and caring, and provides a homely environment where children feel confident and secure.  The strong partnerships with parents, other early years settings and external agencies contribute to consistency in children's care and learning.  The childminder is enthusiastic and shows a strong commitment to continuing to improve outcomes for children. For example, she thoroughly monitors children's progress and reflects on her practice in depth to make sure she is meeting their needs

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to challenge and extend children's mathematical skills, such as counting and number recognition, even further.  The childminder does not consistently organise the indoor environment well enough to enable children to access the wealth of innovative resources freely.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make greater use of opportunities to build further on children's mathematical skills  improve the organisation of the indoor play space and resources to help children extend their learning experiences.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's activities indoors and in the garden.  The inspector sampled children's learning records and other relevant documentation.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from written feedback.  The inspector looked at the childminder's self-evaluation and development plans.  The inspector spoke with the childminder during the inspection about children's learning and progress.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of current safeguarding procedures and how to deal with any child protection concerns. She assesses risks to children effectively and takes thorough safety measures that help keep them safe. Children benefit from the childminder's improving knowledge and skills. For example, she attends training that is well targeted on helping children make the best possible progress. She has increased her skills in allowing children time to play independently and identifying the right moment to intervene and move their learning on.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder knows children's interests and abilities well. She provides a wide variety of activities that motivates and engages children in purposeful play. For example, they develop good early writing skills when they make marks in trays of sand. The childminder uses resources well to meet children's needs. For example, she uses an interesting range of toys that talk to help extend children's speaking skills. The childminder sensitively reinforces and builds on children's speech, for example, by repeating words back to them. She provides enjoyable art activities that particularly engage those children who do not normally join in creative play, such as painting on a clear sided easel. The childminder actively involves parents in children's learning. For example, she encourages parents to borrow her resources so they can continue learning at home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder actively encourages children to adopt healthy lifestyles. She provides plenty of active play and helps children develop good physical skills and coordination. For example, children showed great delight as they skilfully hit wet balls with a bat to make marks on the ground. The childminder builds children's self-esteem effectively. For example, she praised and encouraged children saying, 'good sharing', when they worked together to clean construction materials. The childminder helps children develop a good awareness of how to stay safe and manage risks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children develop effective skills they need to be ready for school. They show strong levels of independence and manage their own personal care needs well. For example, they wash their faces after eating and use a mirror to check that they are clean. Children have good social skills and play happily with their friends. They learn to respect and value others. Children behave well and listen to instructions. They are well motivated and keen to learn new skills. Children like to explore and investigate.
