This provision is good

 The childminder develops good relationships with the children she cares for. She has a kind and caring approach that helps children to feel safe and happy.  Children enjoy daily exercise and fresh air in the childminder's well-equipped garden. They develop their understanding of the natural world through frequent outings to local woods, farms and wildlife areas.  Children learn to behave well. The childminder uses praise and has fair and consistent boundaries. She helps the children develop their understanding of how to play together.  The childminder adapts activities well to help children of different ages, abilities and interests to join in and learn at their own pace.  The childminder provides children with a safe environment. She keeps her premises secure and effectively minimises risks to children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not yet made the most of opportunities for professional development that help to develop her teaching skills to a higher level.  The childminder sometimes intervenes too soon when children are thinking about how to answer questions or do things for themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for professional development that help to enhance teaching skills and promote children's learning to an outstanding level?  make the most of all opportunities to help children to think about the answers to questions and how they can do things for themselves.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and her interactions with the children indoors and outside.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the quality of teaching during a specific activity.  A selection of documents were looked at, including children's records and assessments, some policies and procedures and the childminder's self-evaluation.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written testimonials and comments in children's records.  The inspector discussed the childminder's safeguarding arrangements and looked at evidence of the suitability of adult members of the household.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the procedures to follow if she has any concerns about children. She stays up to date with changes to safeguarding legislation and attends child protection training. The childminder reflects on her practice and meets with other providers to share new ideas. She asks for the views of parents and children when evaluating her activities. This helps her to ensure children's experiences match their interests and abilities. The childminder has good links with other providers who care for the children. Information is shared that helps to provide children with consistent learning experiences.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes the children as they play and regularly assesses the progress they make in their learning. She provides parents with daily information about their children's experiences. They work together effectively to implement consistent strategies to support children's development. Children enjoy listening to stories. They learn to handle books from an early age. Older children confidently point to letters and words as the childminder reads. Younger children help to lift the flaps and feel the textures. Mathematics is woven into everyday activities, as, for example, the childminder helps children to count how many building blocks in a tower.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children move freely around the childminder's home and enjoy choosing from the good range of toys and equipment. The childminder encourages children to take part in creative activities. They develop their artistic skills with paints, glue and collage materials. Children learn good manners as they sit together at the table for meals. The childminder talks to the children about the benefits of healthy foods and provides nutritious and interesting meals. Children learn how to keep themselves safe as, for example, the childminder talks to them about road safety.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn a range of skills that helps to prepare them for the next stage of their learning, including school. They learn to wash their hands and independently find their coats and shoes. Children develop a positive approach to learning new things. For example, they work hard to learn to move the swing backwards and forwards by themselves. Children's social skills are promoted well through frequent opportunities to mix with others in a wide variety of different environments.
