This provision is good

 The childminder provides a variety of interesting activities for children. She observes and monitors children's development effectively. All children make good progress in their learning from their starting points.  Children are happy and content in the childminder's care and they benefit from the close relationships they share with her. This supports their confidence and self-esteem.  The childminder promotes children's good health effectively. For example, she provides nutritious meals, follows good hygiene routines and plans experiences to enable children to be physically active.  The childminder recognises the importance of developing her knowledge. For example, she has regular contact with her development worker to get advice and researches childcare websites to read information to extend her skills further.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently identify how she could enhance opportunities for young children to hear spoken words to build on their speaking skills.  Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to fully support young children's learning in counting and numbers during play activities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make more effective use of all opportunities for young children to hear spoken language as they play to support their speaking skills  make better use of opportunities to explore numbers and counting during play, to expand children's mathematical awareness.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder with the children and spoke to her about their learning.  The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection, about the arrangements for observation, assessment and planning.  The inspector sampled documentation the childminder uses to support her practice.  The inspector read and discussed self-evaluation processes with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her duties to safeguard children and knows the procedures to follow if she has a concern about a child's welfare or safety. The childminder regularly reflects on her practice to make continual improvements. For example, since registering she has looked at how to store toys to make them more accessible for children and improve the space for play. The childminder forms friendly relationships with parents and keeps them well informed of their children's progress. She offers them practical advice, for example, on how to liaise with other professionals to support their children's development. The childminder uses risk assessments well to keep the indoor and outdoor environments secure and maintain children's safety at all times.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy their time with the childminder and are motivated to want to learn. She supports their learning well overall through well-planned activities suitable for their age and stage of development. Children have good opportunities to be creative and use their imaginations. For example, they make play dough cakes, add candles and sing happy birthday to each other. The childminder encourages children to persevere and extend their concentration levels. Children enjoy playing in the garden and move freely from indoors to outdoors. They practise early writing skills, for example, using chalks on the ground and make marks on the fence using brushes and water.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a calm and nurturing home. She interacts warmly with children and is very sensitive towards meeting their needs to make them feel secure. For example, she recognises that some children can be shy and supports them to build up their confidence effectively. Children behave well and respond to the childminder's calm and gentle approach. For example, the childminder encourages young children to share and take turns. In addition, children take part in visits within the community where they mix and socialise with other children and build up other friendships.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children show they are happy, comfortable and feel safe in the childminder's care. They concentrate well and are self-motivated, independent and are developing confidence. Children are beginning to care for their own personal needs effectively. For example, they put on their own shoes and know to wash their hands when they come indoors. All children gain key skills which help prepare them for their future learning and eventual move to school.
