Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children throughout the inspection. The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the childminder's suitability to work with children. She discussed children's learning, assessment and planning with the childminder, and her self-evaluation. The inspector obtained written feedback from parents and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder is well qualified and has a secure understanding of the early years foundation stage. She is passionate and dedicated to meeting children's needs. For example, the childminder regularly researches new ways to help children learn. This helps them to stay interested and excited in activities, which contributes to their good progress. The childminder understands her role to protect children from harm. She completes regular risk assessments and conducts fire drills with children, so they know what to do in an emergency. The childminder has robust procedures to follow to report concerns about children's welfare. Safeguarding is effective.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has an effective balance of planned and child-led activities. For example, she successfully helps older children develop their literacy skills and their understanding of the world as they read stories that interest them. For example, children extend their own ideas and talk about the features of a ladybird and other characters as they independently explore prepared resources. They make good links in their learning and further develop their language and understanding. The childminder uses her observations of children's learning effectively to make individual plans for their next steps and inform assessments of their progress. She regularly shares children's development with parents and provides useful information on how they could extend this at home.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder understands the importance of gathering information about babies' and children's individual care needs. She has good procedures to help children settle in and provides a welcoming, friendly environment. The childminder sensitively helps children to take an active part in managing their own personal care and hygiene needs. Children show increasing levels of independence and have positive self-esteem. Children thoroughly enjoy using the outdoor area to develop good physical skills and the childminder has worked hard to develop the garden as a learning environment. The childminder helps children well to learn about other people, places and cultures. They take regular trips out into their community and build on their understanding of the world around them.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make consistently good progress in relation to their starting points. Overall, they are working comfortably in the stages of development typical for their age. Older children show increasing levels of confidence in their ability and have very good social skills. They show readiness for the next stages in their learning, such as starting school.
