This provision is good

 The childminder establishes caring relationships with the children. The environment is warm and nurturing. Children are happy, confident and independent.  The childminder monitors children's learning effectively, to help them achieve. She identifies any gaps in their learning and puts steps in place to close them. Children make good progress from their individual starting points.  The childminder works well with parents to meet the individual needs of children. For example, she provides parents with ideas for activities to carry out at home and she shares what she teaches children.  The childminder regularly reviews and self-evaluates her practice, to help improve outcomes for children. For example, more play resources are available to help children learn and develop. She takes account of the views of parents and children when making improvements to her provision.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder, on occasion, misses opportunities to extend children's literacy skills further.  At times, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities to extend children's understanding of mathematical ideas and problem-solving skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 expand on the range of opportunities for children to develop their literacy skills further  develop more learning opportunities to challenge and extend children's understanding of mathematics and problem-solving skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children engaged in activities and the childminder's interaction with them.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and the parents at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation including children's details, learning records, insurance and other relevant documentation.  The inspector looked at parts of the house used for childminding purposes.  The inspector observed children's play with the childminder and discussed children's learning and progress.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows how to identify any concerns about a child's welfare and the reporting procedures to follow. She knows to notify Ofsted of any significant events. She carries out risk assessments to help keep children safe. The childminder develops her professional practice to help extend her childcare skills. For instance, she now manages children's behaviour more skilfully and uses improved techniques to encourage the development of their language and communication. She works well with other childminders to share ideas and improve her practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of the childminder's teaching is good and she knows the children well. She carries out detailed observations and assessments of their learning, to help her plan interesting activities. The childminder supports children's language development effectively. For example, she provides mask-making activities and has meaningful conversations with children about what they are doing. The childminder offers children guidance and help when needed. Children have good opportunities to learn about the process of growing vegetables. For instance, they enjoy planting seeds to grow tomatoes and they learn to control the tap to collect enough water to fill up their watering buckets. The childminder helps children to develop their social skills well. For instance, she takes them to different playgroups to meet and interact with others.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well. The childminder acts as a good role model for children; she talks to them about what is right and wrong and how their actions affect others. Children eat nutritious foods and learn about healthy lifestyles. They enjoy daily opportunities to exercise, ride wheeled toys and move around freely. The childminder helps children to understand what contributes to good health. For example, she reminds them to wash their hands before eating and after using the toilet. The childminder helps children appreciate wider society. For example, she celebrates different cultural festivals with them, introducing new foods to taste.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are well prepared for their next stage in learning, including school. For instance, they are able to follow instructions, such as helping to apply sun cream in hot weather. They understand the use of objects, such as using tomato seeds to plant and grow in pots. Children understand prepositions, such as placing the seeds 'under' the soil. Children understand that equipment and tools have to be used safely.
